INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Risa: And I'm Risa.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 9. Talking About the Future.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for describing something in the future.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "I'll go to Kyoto tomorrow."
Risa: 私は、あした京都に行きます。 (Watashi wa, ashita Kyōto ni ikimasu.)
Risa: [slow] 私は、あした京都に行きます。 (Watashi wa, ashita Kyōto ni ikimasu.)
Eric: The pattern for describing something in the future has 3 elements. First, "I" + topic marking particle.
Risa: 私は (Watashi wa ).
Eric: Second, tomorrow.
Risa: あした (ashita).
Eric: Third, the verb phrase "to go to Kyōto".
Risa: 京都 (Kyōto)
Eric: followed by a direction marking particle,
Risa: に (ni)
Eric: and the masu form of a verb meaning “to go".
Risa: 行きます (ikimasu)
Risa: 京都に行きます (Kyōto ni ikimasu)
Eric: Altogether, we have.. "I'll go to Kyoto tomorrow."
Risa: 私は、あした京都に行きます。 (Watashi wa, ashita Kyōto ni ikimasu.) [slow] 私は、あした京都に行きます。 (Watashi wa, ashita Kyōto ni ikimasu.) [normal] 私は、あした京都に行きます。 (Watashi wa, ashita Kyōto ni ikimasu.)
Eric: To say “I'll [do something]. ” in Japanese, the topic
Risa: 私は (Watashi wa)
Eric: comes first, then a future time expression
Risa: あした (ashita)
Eric: and verb or verb phrase in masu form.
Risa: 京都に行きます (Kyōto ni ikimasu).
Risa: 私は、あした京都に行きます。 (Watashi wa, ashita Kyōto ni ikimasu.)
Eric: So remember that to describe something in the future, say ([Person] wa), [future time expression], and a verb or verb phrase in masu form at the end. Note that you can omit the person, if it is clear who you are referring to.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I'll eat sushi tomorrow." First, "I" + topic marking particle.
Risa: 私は (Watashi wa )
Eric: Second, tomorrow.
Risa: あした (ashita)
Eric: Third, the verb phrase "to eat sushi", broken down into these parts. First,
Risa: 寿司 (Sushi)
Eric: followed by an object marking particle,
Risa: を (o)
Eric: and the masu form of the verb meaning “to eat”.
Risa: 食べます (tabemasu)
Risa: 寿司を食べます (sushi o tabemasu).
Eric: Altogether we have..
Risa: 私は、あした寿司を食べます。 (Watashi wa, ashita sushi o tabemasu.) [slow] 私は、あした寿司を食べます。 (Watashi wa, ashita sushi o tabemasu.) [normal] 私は、あした寿司を食べます。 (Watashi wa, ashita sushi o tabemasu.)
Eric: "I'll eat sushi tomorrow."
[pause]
Risa: 私は、あした寿司を食べます。 (Watashi wa, ashita sushi o tabemasu.)
Eric: How do you say - "I'll call you tomorrow"? To give you a hint, "to call" is..
Risa: 電話します (denwa shimasu). [slow] 電話します (denwa shimasu). [normal] 電話します (denwa shimasu).
Eric: "I'll call you tomorrow."
[pause]
Risa: あした、電話します。 (Ashita, denwa shimasu.) [slow] あした、電話します。 (Ashita, denwa shimasu.) [normal] あした、電話します。 (Ashita, denwa shimasu.)
[pause]
Risa: あした、電話します。 (Ashita, denwa shimasu.)
REVIEW
Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Japanese. Here we go.
Eric: "I'll go to Kyoto tomorrow."
[pause]
Risa: 私は、あした京都に行きます。 (Watashi wa, ashita Kyōto ni ikimasu.)
[pause]
Risa: 私は、あした京都に行きます。 (Watashi wa, ashita Kyōto ni ikimasu.)
Eric: "I'll eat sushi tomorrow."
[pause]
Risa: 私は、あした寿司を食べます。 (Watashi wa, ashita sushi o tabemasu.)
[pause]
Risa: 私は、あした寿司を食べます。 (Watashi wa, ashita sushi o tabemasu.)

Eric: meaning "I'll go to Kyoto tomorrow."

Beverleyさん、こんにちは!

コメントどうもありがとうございます😊

Thank you for trying sentences.

Please make sure to use the particle に, not を, after a destination, as in [place] に行きます.

So the first three sentence should be

映画館に行きます

水泳プールに行きます

タイランドに行きます

Please let us know if you have any further question:)

Sincerely,

Miho

>Hi David,

Thank you for your comment!

歳 and 才 are correct and both mean "years old". 才 is a simplified character and often used in daily, sometimes in official situations as well.

In the vocabulary list "才" is used as the kanji for 'sai', meaning 'years old'. Is this right? I always thought '歳' was the kanji for the counter of years of age.
