INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Risa: And I'm Risa.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 8. Talking About Things You Do Often.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for Talking About Things You Do Often.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "I often exercise."
Risa: 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.)
Risa: [slow] 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.)
Eric: The pattern for Talking About Things You Do Often has 3 elements. First, "I" + topic marking particle.
Risa: 私は (Watashi wa ).
Eric: Second, an adverb meaning "often".
Risa: よく (yoku).
Eric: Third, a verb in the masu form meaning "to exercise."
Risa: 運動します (undō shimasu).
Eric: Altogether, we have.. "I often exercise."
Risa: 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.) [slow] 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.) [normal] 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.)
Eric: To say “[Person] often do/does [something].” in Japanese, person, in this case “I,” plus the topic marking particle
Risa: 私は (watashi wa)
Eric: comes first; and the frequency adverb
Risa: よく (yoku)
Eric: then a verb or verb phrase in the non-past tense or masu form meaning "do something", in this case,
Risa: 運動します (undō shimasu).
Risa: 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.)
Eric: So remember that to talk about something you do often, say [Person], the topic marking particle
Risa: は (wa)
Eric: the frequency adverb
Risa: よく (yoku)
Eric: and a verb or verb phrase in the non-past tense or masu form at the end.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I often go to a sushi place." First, "I" + topic marking particle.
Risa: 私は (Watashi wa )
Eric: Second, an adverb meaning "often".
Risa: よく (yoku)
Eric: Third, a verb phrase meaning "to go to a sushi place" - broken down into these parts. First,
Risa: 寿司屋(Sushi-ya)
Eric: followed by a direction marking particle,
Risa: に (ni)
Eric: and the masu form of a verb meaning "to go".
Risa: 行きます (ikimasu)
Risa: 寿司屋に行きます (sushi-ya ni ikimasu).
Eric: Altogether we have..
Risa: 私は、よく寿司屋に行きます。 (Watashi wa, yoku sushi-ya ni ikimasu.) [slow] 私は、よく寿司屋に行きます。 (Watashi wa, yoku sushi-ya ni ikimasu.) [normal] 私は、よく寿司屋に行きます。 (Watashi wa, yoku sushi-ya ni ikimasu.)
Eric: "I often go to a sushi place."

Risa: 私はよく寿司屋に行きます。 (Watashi wa, yoku sushi-ya ni ikimasu.)
Eric: How do you say - "Japanese people often eat fish"? To give you a hint, "fish" is..
Risa: 魚 (sakana). [slow] 魚 (sakana). [normal] 魚 (sakana).
Eric: "Japanese people often eat fish."

Risa: 日本人は、よく魚を食べます。 (NIhon-jin wa, yoku sakana o tabemasu. ) [slow] 日本人は、よく魚を食べます。 (NIhon-jin wa, yoku sakana o tabemasu. ) [normal] 日本人は、よく魚を食べます。 (NIhon-jin wa, yoku sakana o tabemasu. )

Risa: 日本人は、よく魚を食べます。 (NIhon-jin wa, yoku sakana o tabemasu. )
