Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for Talking About Family Members. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, |
Eric: "I have a sister." |
Risa: 妹がいます。 (Imōto ga imasu.) |
Risa: [slow] 妹がいます。 (Imōto ga imasu.) |
Eric: The pattern for Talking About Family Members has 3 elements. First, younger sister. |
Risa: 妹 (Imōto). |
Eric: Second, a subject marking particle, (used when introducing subject in a sentence for the first time). |
Risa: が (ga). |
Eric: Third, a verb for an animate object, in this case, "to have" . |
Risa: います (imasu). |
Eric: Altogether, we have.. "I have a sister." |
Risa: 妹がいます。 (Imōto ga imasu.) [slow] 妹がいます。 (Imōto ga imasu.) [normal] 妹がいます。 (Imōto ga imasu.) |
Eric: To say “I have [someone].” in Japanese, the subject |
Risa: 妹 (imōto) |
Eric: comes first; followed by the subject marking particle |
Risa: が (ga) |
Eric: then the verb “to have/exist” |
Risa: います (imasu). |
Risa: 妹がいます。 (Imōto ga imasu.) |
Eric: So remember that to say you have a family member, friend or partner, say the person you are speaking about, the subject marking particle |
Risa: が (ga) |
Eric: and the verb |
Risa: います (imasu) |
Eric: at the end. |
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I have a kid." First, kid. |
Risa: こども (Kodomo) |
Eric: Second, the subject marking particle that is used when introducing a subject in a sentence for the first time. |
Risa: が (ga) |
Eric: Third, the verb for an animate object, in this case, "to have". |
Risa: います (imasu) |
Eric: Altogether we have.. |

Eric: How do you say - "I have a Japanese friend"? To give you a hint, "friend" is.. |
