INTRODUCTION |
John: Hi everyone, I'm John. |
Risa: And I'm Risa. |
John: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 50. Explaining a Reason or Cause. |
John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for explaining the cause or reason for an action or condition. |
PATTERN |
John: For example, |
John: "I'm going to bed early because I'm tired." |
Risa: ็ฒใใใใใๆฉใๅฏใพใใ (Tsukareta kara, hayaku nemasu.) |
Risa: [slow] ็ฒใใใใใๆฉใๅฏใพใใ (Tsukareta kara, hayaku nemasu.) |
John: The pattern for explaining the cause or reason for an action or condition has three elements. First, a sentence indicating the cause, in this case "I'm tired." |
Risa: ็ฒใใ (Tsukareta) |
John: Second, a conjunction that means "because." |
Risa: ใใ (kara) |
John: Third, a sentence with the main action, meaning "I'm going to bed early." |
Risa: ๆฉใๅฏใพใ (hayaku nemasu) |
John: Altogether, we have... "I'm going to bed early because I'm tired." |
Risa: ็ฒใใใใใๆฉใๅฏใพใใ (Tsukareta kara, hayaku nemasu.) [slow] ็ฒใใใใใๆฉใๅฏใพใใ (Tsukareta kara, hayaku nemasu.) [normal] ็ฒใใใใใๆฉใๅฏใพใใ (Tsukareta kara, hayaku nemasu.) |
John: The sentence pattern to say "because..." in Japanese, is a sentence that expresses cause or reason, followed by the conjunction meaning "because," then the sentence referring to the action or condition that is caused by the preceding sentence. |
Again, "I'm going to bed early because I'm tired." is... |
Risa: ็ฒใใใใใๆฉใๅฏใพใใ (Tsukareta kara, hayaku nemasu.) |
John: So remember, to explain the cause or reason for an action or condition, you say the sentence containing the cause or reason plus |
Risa: ใใ (kara) |
John: then add the sentence referring to the action or condition caused by the preceding sentence. |
John: Here is another example meaning, "Please be careful because it's dangerous here." First, a sentence indicating the cause and meaning "It's dangerous here." |
Risa: ใใใฏๅฑใชใ (Koko wa abunai) |
John: Second, the conjunction meaning "because." |
Risa: ใใ (kara) |
John: Third, a sentence meaning "Please be careful." |
Risa: ๆฐใไปใใฆใใ ใใ (ki o tsukete kudasai) |
John: Altogether we have... |
Risa: ใใใฏๅฑใชใใใใๆฐใไปใใฆใใ ใใใ (Koko wa abunai kara, ki o tsukete kudasai.) [slow] ใใใฏๅฑใชใใใใๆฐใไปใใฆใใ ใใใ (Koko wa abunai kara, ki o tsukete kudasai.) [normal] ใใใฏๅฑใชใใใใๆฐใไปใใฆใใ ใใใ (Koko wa abunai kara, ki o tsukete kudasai.) |
John: "Please be careful because it's dangerous here." |
[pause] |
Risa: ใใใฏๅฑใชใใใใๆฐใไปใใฆใใ ใใใ (Koko wa abunai kara, ki o tsukete kudasai.) |
John: How do you say, "I want to drink water since I'm thirsty." To give you a hint, "to be thirsty" is... |
Risa: ใฎใฉใๆธใ(nodo ga kawaku) |
John: which in the past tense isโฆ. |
Risa: ใฎใฉใๆธใใ (nodo ga kawaita). [slow] ใฎใฉใๆธใใ (nodo ga kawaita) |
John: "I want to drink water since I'm thirsty." |
[pause] |
Risa: ใฎใฉใๆธใใใใใๆฐดใ้ฃฒใฟใใใงใใ (Nodo ga kawaita kara, mizu ga nomitai desu.) [slow] ใฎใฉใๆธใใใใใๆฐดใ้ฃฒใฟใใใงใใ (Nodo ga kawaita kara, mizu ga nomitai desu.) [normal] ใฎใฉใๆธใใใใใๆฐดใ้ฃฒใฟใใใงใใ (Nodo ga kawaita kara, mizu ga nomitai desu.) |
[pause] |
Risa: ใฎใฉใๆธใใใใใๆฐดใ้ฃฒใฟใใใงใใ (Nodo ga kawaita kara, mizu ga nomitai desu.) |
