INTRODUCTION
John: Hi everyone, I'm John.
Risa: And I'm Risa.
John: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 49. Asking Indirect Questions.
John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking indirect questions.
PATTERN
John: For example,
John: "Do you know where the Sky Tree is?"
Risa: スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.)
Risa: [slow] スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.)
John: The pattern for asking indirect questions has three elements. First, a sentence in informal form, which refers to the question, in this case "where the Sky Tree is."
Risa: スカイツリーがどこにある (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru)
John: Second, the particle to make embedded questions.
Risa: か (ka)
John: Third, a phrase meaning "do you know?".
Risa: 知っていますか (shitte imasu ka).
John: Altogether, we have... "Do you know where the Sky Tree is?"
Risa: スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.) [slow] スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.) [normal] スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.)
John: The sentence pattern to say "Do you know...?" in Japanese, is a sentence in informal form which refers to the question, followed by the particle to make the sentence into an embedded question, plus a phrase meaning "Do you know?"
Again, "Do you know where the Sky Tree is?" is...
Risa: スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.)
John: So remember, to ask indirect questions, you say the question sentence in informal form followed by...
Risa: か (ka)
John: and finally…
Risa: 知っていますか (shitte imasu ka)
John: Here is another example meaning, "Do you know who that person is?" First, a sentence in informal form, meaning "who that person is."
Risa: あの人は誰 (Ano hito wa dare)
John: Second, a particle to make embedded questions.
Risa: か (ka)
John: Third, a phrase meaning "do you know?".
Risa: 知っていますか (shitte imasu ka)
John: Altogether we have...
Risa: あの人は誰か、知っていますか。 (Ano hito wa dare ka, shitte imasu ka.) [slow] あの人は誰か、知っていますか。 (Ano hito wa dare ka, shitte imasu ka.) [normal] あの人は誰か、知っていますか。 (Ano hito wa dare ka, shitte imasu ka.)
John: "Do you know who that person is?"
[pause]
Risa: あの人は誰か、知っていますか。 (Ano hito wa dare ka, shitte imasu ka.)
John: How do you say, "Do you know how much this ticket is?" To give you a hint, "how much" is...
Risa: いくら (ikura). [slow] いくら (ikura). [normal] いくら (ikura).
John: "Do you know how much this ticket is?"
[pause]
Risa: このチケットがいくらか、知っていますか。 (Kono chiketto ga ikura ka, shitte imasu ka.) [slow] このチケットがいくらか、知っていますか。 (Kono chiketto ga ikura ka, shitte imasu ka.) [normal] このチケットがいくらか、知っていますか。 (Kono chiketto ga ikura ka, shitte imasu ka.)
[pause]
Risa: このチケットがいくらか、知っていますか。 (Kono chiketto ga ikura ka, shitte imasu ka.)
REVIEW
John: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Japanese. Here we go.
John: "Do you know where the Sky Tree is?"
[pause]
Risa: スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.)
[pause]
Risa: スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.)
John: "Do you know who that person is?"
[pause]
Risa: あの人は誰か、知っていますか。 (Ano hito wa dare ka, shitte imasu ka.)
[pause]
Risa: あの人は誰か、知っていますか。 (Ano hito wa dare ka, shitte imasu ka.)
John: "Do you know how much this ticket is?"
[pause]
Risa: このチケットがいくらか、知っていますか。 (Kono chiketto ga ikura ka, shitte imasu ka.)
[pause]
Risa: このチケットがいくらか、知っていますか。 (Kono chiketto ga ikura ka, shitte imasu ka.)

Outro

John: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for asking indirect questions, as in...
Risa: スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.)
John: meaning "Do you know where the Sky Tree is?"
John: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out on JapanesePod101.com. Thanks everyone, see you next time!
Risa: またね!(Mata ne!).
