| John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing certainty. |
| PATTERN |
| John: For example, |
| John: "I'm sure I can make it." |
| Risa: きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.) |
| Risa: [slow] きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.) |
| John: The pattern for expressing certainty has four elements. First, an adverb meaning "surely," |
| Risa: きっと (Kitto). |
| John: Second, an informal sentence meaning "I can make it." . |
| Risa: 間に合う (ma ni au). |
| John: Third, a quotation marker, |
| Risa: と (to). |
| John: And last, a verb meaning "to think," |
| Risa: 思います (omoimasu). |
| John: Altogether, we have... "I'm sure I can make it." |
| Risa: きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.) [slow] きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.) [normal] きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.) |
| John: The sentence pattern to say "I'm sure that..." in Japanese starts with an adverb meaning "surely," |
| Risa: きっと (Kitto) |
| John: plus an informal sentence expressing what you have confidence in, plus the quotation marker, |
| Risa: と (to). |
| John: And finally, a verb meaning "to think," |
| Risa: 思います (omoimasu). |
| John: So, "I'm sure I can make it." would be |
| Risa: きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.) |
| John: So, to express certainty, remember to first say |
| Risa: きっと (Kitto) |
| John: then what you are sure of in an informal sentence. At the end, add |
| Risa: と思います (to omoimasu). |
| John: Here is another example meaning, "I'm sure it'll be alright." First, the adverb meaning "surely," |
| Risa: きっと (Kitto). |
| John: Second, an informal sentence meaning "It'll be alright." . |
| Risa: 大丈夫だ (daijōbu da). |
| John: Third, a quotation marker, |
| Risa: と (to). |
| John: And last, a verb meaning "to think," |
| Risa: 思います (omoimasu). |
