INTRODUCTION |
John: Hi everyone, I'm John. |
Risa: And I'm Risa. |
John: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 33 - Giving Advice. |
John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for giving advice. |
PATTERN |
John: For example, |
John: "You'd better exercise." |
Risa: 運動した方がいいですよ。 (Undō shita hō ga ii desu yo. ) |
Risa: [slow] 運動した方がいいですよ。 (Undō shita hō ga ii desu yo. ) |
John: The pattern for giving advice has four elements. First, a verb phrase meaning "to exercise" in the past tense. |
Risa: 運動した (Undō shita). |
John: Second, a phrase meaning "had better..." |
Risa: 方がいい (hō ga ii ). |
John: Third, a linking verb |
Risa: です (desu). |
John: And last, a sentence-ending particle expressing a strong conviction about something. |
Risa: よ (yo). |
John: Altogether, we have... "You'd better exercise." |
Risa: 運動した方がいいですよ。 (Undō shita hō ga ii desu yo. ) [slow] 運動した方がいいですよ。 (Undō shita hō ga ii desu yo. ) [normal] 運動した方がいいですよ。 (Undō shita hō ga ii desu yo. ) |
John: The sentence pattern for saying “You'd better...” in Japanese is made by the informal past form of the main verb or verb phrase plus a phrase meaning "had better" |
Risa: 方がいい (hō ga ii ) |
John: plus the linking verb |
Risa: です (desu). |
John: and finally the sentence ending particle |
Risa: よ (yo). |
John: So "You'd better exercise." would be |
Risa: 運動した方がいいですよ。 (Undō shita hō ga ii desu yo. ) |
John: So, to give someone advice, remember to first say your suggestion with the past tense of a verb, plus a phrase meaning "had better..." |
Risa: 方がいい (hō ga ii ) |
John: then add the linking verb |
Risa: です (desu). |
John: and finally the sentence ending particle |
Risa: よ (yo). |
John: Here is another example meaning, "You'd better go to the hot springs." First, a verb phrase meaning "to go to the hot springs" in the past tense, |
Risa: 温泉に行った (Onsen ni itta). |
John: Second, a phrase meaning "had better..." |
Risa: 方がいい (hō ga ii ). |
John: Third, a linking verb, |
Risa: です (desu). |
John: And last, a sentence-ending particle expressing a strong conviction about something. |
Risa: よ (yo). |
John: Altogether we have... |
Risa: 温泉に行った方がいいですよ。 (Onsen ni itta hō ga ii desu yo.) [slow] 温泉に行った方がいいですよ。 (Onsen ni itta hō ga ii desu yo.) [normal] 温泉に行った方がいいですよ。 (Onsen ni itta hō ga ii desu yo.) |
John: "You'd better go to the hot springs." |
[pause] |
Risa: 温泉に行った方がいいですよ。 (Onsen ni itta hō ga ii desu yo.) |
John: How do you say, "You'd better take a good rest." To give you a hint, "to take a good rest" is... |
Risa: ゆっくり休む (yukkuri yasumu). [slow] ゆっくり休む (yukkuri yasumu). [normal] ゆっくり休む |
(yukkuri yasumu). |
John: "You'd better take a good rest." |
[pause] |
Risa: ゆっくり休んだ方がいいですよ。 (Yukkuri yasunda hō ga ii desu yo.) [slow] ゆっくり休んだ方がいいですよ。 (Yukkuri yasunda hō ga ii desu yo.) [normal] ゆっくり休んだ方がいいですよ。 (Yukkuri yasunda hō ga ii desu yo.) |
[pause] |
Risa: ゆっくり休んだ方がいいですよ。 (Yukkuri yasunda hō ga ii desu yo.) |
