| John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing gratitude to someone for doing something. |
| PATTERN |
| John: For example, |
| John: "Thank you for helping me." |
| Risa: 手伝ってくれて、ありがとう。 (Tetsudatte kurete, arigatō.) |
| Risa: [slow] 手伝ってくれて、ありがとう。 (Tetsudatte kurete, arigatō.) |
| John: The pattern for expressing gratitude to someone for doing something has three elements. First, the -te form of the verb meaning "to help" . |
| Risa: 手伝って (Tetsudatte-). |
| John: Second the verb, which literally means "to give me something." |
| Risa: くれる (kureru) |
| John: in the -te form |
| Risa: くれて (kurete) |
| John: When this verb is preceded by the -te form of a verb, it means that the action is done for you or someone in your “in-group.” |
| John: Third, a phrase meaning "thank you". |
| Risa: ありがとう (arigatō). |
| John: Altogether, we have... "Thank you for helping me." |
| Risa: 手伝ってくれて、ありがとう。 (Tetsudatte kurete, arigatō.) |
| [slow] 手伝ってくれて、ありがとう。 (Tetsudatte kurete, arigatō.) [normal] 手伝ってくれて、ありがとう。 (Tetsudatte kurete, arigatō.) |
| John: The sentence pattern for expressing gratitude to someone for doing something for you in Japanese is the -te form of the main verb or verb phrase plus |
| Risa: くれて (kurete) |
| John: which means that the action is done for you or someone in your “in-group,” and finally you add: |
| Risa: ありがとう (arigatō). |
| John: So, "Thank you for helping me." would be |
| Risa: 手伝ってくれて、ありがとう。 (Tetsudatte kurete, arigatō.) |
| John: So, to say "Thank you for [doing something]," remember to say the -te form of a verb or verb phrase followed by |
| Risa: くれて (kurete) |
| John: then just add |
| Risa: ありがとう (arigatō). |
| John: Here is another example meaning, "Thank you for coming." First, the -te form of the verb meaning "to come" . |

| John: Second, the -te form of the verb which literally means "to give me something." |
| Risa: くれて (kurete). |
| John: Third, a phrase meaning "thank you". |
| Risa: ありがとう (arigatō). |
