INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Risa: And I'm Risa. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 21. Using the Verb “To Want.” |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing that you want to do something. |
PATTERN |
Eric: Our first example is "I want to take a rest." |
Risa: 休みたいです。 (Yasumi tai desu.) |
Risa: [slow] 休みたいです。 (Yasumi tai desu.) |
Eric: The pattern for expressing that you want to do something has 3 elements. First, the masu-stem of the verb meaning "to take a rest." |
Risa: 休み (Yasumi-). |
Eric: Second, the auxiliary adjective to be used to express a desire to do something. |
Risa: たい (tai). |
Eric: Third, the linking verb. |
Risa: です (desu). |
Eric: Altogether, we have, "I want to take a rest." |
Risa: 休みたいです。 (Yasumi tai desu.) [slow] 休みたいです。 (Yasumi tai desu.) [normal] 休みたいです。 (Yasumi tai desu.) |
Eric: To describe what you want to do in Japanese, first say the masu-stem of the verb expressing the action you want to do. |
Risa: 休み (yasumi), |
Eric: and then the auxiliary adjective |
Risa: たい (-tai) |
Eric: and at the end, add |
Risa: です (desu) |
Eric: All together, |
Risa: 休みたいです。 (Yasumi tai desu.) |
Eric: So remember to make the pattern expressing that you want to do something, say the masu-stem of a verb and add |
Risa:たいです (-tai desu). |
Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "I want to eat rāmen." First, the verb phrase meaning "to eat rāmen" with the masu-stem of a verb. Let’s break this phrase down, first we have the word meaning “ramen,” |
Risa: ラーメン (Rāmen) |
Eric: followed by the particle, |
Risa: が (ga) |
Eric: and then add the masu-stem of a verb meaning "to eat," |
Risa: 食べ (tabe). |
Eric: All together, the verb phrase is |
Risa: ラーメンが食べ (Rāmen ga tabe-). |
Eric: Second, the auxiliary adjective used to express a desire to do something. |
Risa: たい (tai). |
Eric: And last, the linking verb. |
Risa: です (desu). |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Risa: ラーメンが食べたいです。 (Rāmen ga tabetai desu.) [slow] ラーメンが食べたいです。 (Rāmen ga tabetai desu.) [normal] ラーメンが食べたいです。 (Rāmen ga tabetai desu.) |
Eric: "I want to eat rāmen." |
[pause] |
Risa: ラーメンが食べたいです。 (Rāmen ga tabetai desu.) |
Eric: Is there anyone who thinks you should use an object marking particle (o), because (ラーメン) is an object of (たべる)? That’s good, it means you’re paying attention. However, for an object for a verb + tai pattern, the particle (が) is used instead of the object marking particle, (を)." |
Eric: Ok, now a quiz. How do you say - "I want to go to Okinawa." To give you a hint, "to go" is... |
Risa: 行く(iku) |
Eric: and its masu form is, |
Risa: 行きます (ikimasu). [slow] 行きます (ikimasu). [normal] 行きます (ikimasu). |
Eric: "I want to go to Okinawa." |
[pause] |
Risa: 沖縄に行きたいです。 (Okinawa ni ikitai desu.) [slow] 沖縄に行きたいです。 (Okinawa ni ikitai desu.) [normal] 沖縄に行きたいです。 (Okinawa ni ikitai desu.) |
[pause] |
Risa: 沖縄に行きたいです。 (Okinawa ni ikitai desu.) |

Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I’ll give you the English equivalent of the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud in Japanese. Here we go. |
Eric: "I want to take a rest." |
