| Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for making suggestions. |
| PATTERN |
| Eric: For example, |
| Eric: "Let's eat." |
| Risa: 食べましょう。 (Tabemashō.) |
| Risa: [slow] 食べましょう。 (Tabemashō.) |
| Eric: The pattern for making suggestions has 2 elements. First, the masu-stem of the verb "to eat". |
| Risa: 食べ (Tabe-). |
| Eric: Second, the volitional verb ending, which makes a suggestion or proposal. |
| Risa: ましょう (mashō). |
| Eric: Altogether, we have.. "Let's eat." |
| Risa: 食べましょう。 (Tabemashō.) [slow] 食べましょう。 (Tabemashō.) [normal] 食べましょう。 (Tabemashō.) |
| Eric: To say “Let's do [something].” in Japanese, you just have to replace the ‘-masu’ in a verb or verb phrase with the ‘masu’ stem |
| Risa: 食べ (Tabe-) |
| Eric: with “mashō." |
| Risa: 食べましょう。(Tabemashō.) |
| Risa: 食べましょう。 (Tabemashō.) |
| Eric: So remember that to make suggestions, just say a verb or verb phrase with the masu-stem of the verb, connected with mashō. |
| Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Let's go to lunch. " First, the verb phrase "to go to lunch" with the masu-stem of the verb |
| Risa: 昼ごはん (Hiru-gohan) |
| Eric: followed by a direction marking particle, |
| Risa: に (ni) |
| Eric: and the masu stem of a verb meaning "to go", |
| Risa: 行き (iki) |
| Risa: 昼ごはんに行き (Hiru-gohan ni iki-). |
| Eric: Second, the volitional verb ending, which makes a suggestion or proposal. |
| Risa: ましょう (mashō). |
| Eric: Altogether we have.. |
| Risa: 昼ごはんに行きましょう。 (Hiru-gohan ni ikimashō.) [slow] 昼ごはんに行きましょう。 (Hiru-gohan ni ikimashō.) [normal] 昼ごはんに行きましょう。 (Hiru-gohan ni ikimashō.) |

| Eric: How do you say - "Let's meet at 5:00." To give you a hint, "to meet" is.. |
