INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Risa: And I'm Risa.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 12. Proposing an Activity.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for making suggestions.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "Let's eat."
Risa: ้ฃŸในใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Tabemashล.)
Risa: [slow] ้ฃŸในใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Tabemashล.)
Eric: The pattern for making suggestions has 2 elements. First, the masu-stem of the verb "to eat".
Risa: ้ฃŸใน (Tabe-).
Eric: Second, the volitional verb ending, which makes a suggestion or proposal.
Risa: ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† (mashล).
Eric: Altogether, we have.. "Let's eat."
Risa: ้ฃŸในใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Tabemashล.) [slow] ้ฃŸในใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Tabemashล.) [normal] ้ฃŸในใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Tabemashล.)
Eric: To say โ€œLet's do [something].โ€ in Japanese, you just have to replace the โ€˜-masuโ€™ in a verb or verb phrase with the โ€˜masuโ€™ stem
Risa: ้ฃŸใน (Tabe-)
Eric: with โ€œmashล."
Risa: ้ฃŸในใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚(Tabemashล.)
Risa: ้ฃŸในใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Tabemashล.)
Eric: So remember that to make suggestions, just say a verb or verb phrase with the masu-stem of the verb, connected with mashล.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Let's go to lunch. " First, the verb phrase "to go to lunch" with the masu-stem of the verb
Risa: ๆ˜ผใ”ใฏใ‚“ (Hiru-gohan)
Eric: followed by a direction marking particle,
Risa: ใซ (ni)
Eric: and the masu stem of a verb meaning "to go",
Risa: ่กŒใ (iki)
Risa: ๆ˜ผใ”ใฏใ‚“ใซ่กŒใ (Hiru-gohan ni iki-).
Eric: Second, the volitional verb ending, which makes a suggestion or proposal.
Risa: ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† (mashล).
Eric: Altogether we have..
Eric: "Let's go to lunch. "
[pause]
Risa: ๆ˜ผใ”ใฏใ‚“ใซ่กŒใใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Hiru-gohan ni ikimashล.)
Eric: How do you say - "Let's meet at 5:00." To give you a hint, "to meet" is..
Risa: ไผšใ„ใพใ™ (aimasu). [slow] ไผšใ„ใพใ™ (aimasu). [normal] ไผšใ„ใพใ™ (aimasu).
Eric: "Let's meet at 5:00."
[pause]
Risa: ๏ผ•ๆ™‚ใซไผšใ„ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Go-ji ni aimashล. ) [slow] ๏ผ•ๆ™‚ใซไผšใ„ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Go-ji ni aimashล. ) [normal] ๏ผ•ๆ™‚ใซไผšใ„ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Go-ji ni aimashล. )
[pause]
Risa: ๏ผ•ๆ™‚ใซไผšใ„ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Go-ji ni aimashล. )
REVIEW
Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Japanese. Here we go.
Eric: "Let's eat."
[pause]
Risa: ้ฃŸในใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Tabemashล.)
[pause]
Risa: ้ฃŸในใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Tabemashล.)
Eric: "Let's go to lunch. "
[pause]
Risa: ๆ˜ผใ”ใฏใ‚“ใซ่กŒใใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Hiru-gohan ni ikimashล.)
[pause]
Risa: ๆ˜ผใ”ใฏใ‚“ใซ่กŒใใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Hiru-gohan ni ikimashล.)
Eric: "Let's meet at 5:00."
[pause]
Risa: ๏ผ•ๆ™‚ใซไผšใ„ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Go-ji ni aimashล. )
[pause]
Risa: ๏ผ•ๆ™‚ใซไผšใ„ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Go-ji ni aimashล. )

Outro

Eric: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for making suggestions, as in..
Risa: ้ฃŸในใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚ (Tabemashล.)
Eric: meaning "Let's eat."
Eric: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out on JapanesePod101.com. Thanks everyone, see you next time!

ใ‚ณใƒกใƒณใƒˆใ‚ใ‚ŠใŒใจใ†ใ”ใ–ใ„ใพใ™๐Ÿ˜Š

Both ๆ˜ผ้ฃŸ (chลซshoku) and ๆ˜ผใ”้ฃฏ (hirugohan) mean "lunch" in English.

However, there is a slight difference in their usage.

ๆ˜ผ้ฃŸ (chลซshoku) is a bit more formal and is often used in formal settings or written language.

On the other hand, ๆ˜ผใ”้ฃฏ (hirugohan) is more casual and is commonly used in daily conversation.

So, if you're talking to your friends or family about what you had for lunch, you might say ๆ˜ผใ”้ฃฏ.

But if you're writing a report or speaking in a formal setting, you might choose to use ๆ˜ผ้ฃŸ.

I hope this helps!

Keep up the great work with your studies:)

Sincerely,

Miho

Does this work with every verb or just some? And if it doesn't, what else would you add to the -masu stem of the verb instead?
