| Peter: So タケ is exchanging emails with a girl he never met before. |

| ヒデ: へぇ、彼女の名前、愛っていうんだ！とうとう彼女に会ったか！で、いつ結婚？ |
| タケ: やめてくれよ！だいたい、直接会ったのを今は後悔してるんだ。 |
| ヒデ: 何で、後悔してるんだよ。 |
| タケ: 確かに顔は可愛かったよ。けど、最初に、「こんにちは、愛です」って、自己紹介だけして、すぐに、携帯メールを打ち出したんだぜ。 |
| ヒデ: 友達にメールしてたのか？ |
| タケ: いや、俺にメールしてたんだよ。一緒にいるのに、メールのやり取りだけ。。。一緒に食事をしているのに、俺の顔も見ないんだよ。 |

| TAKE: I met Ai yesterday. |

| HIDE: So her name is Ai, huh.So you finally met her. So when's the wedding? |
| タケ: やめてくれよ！だいたい、直接会ったのを今は後悔してるんだ。 |
| TAKE: Cut it out. To tell you the truth, I regret meeting her face to face. |
| ヒデ: 何で、後悔してるんだよ。 |
| HIDE: Why do you regret it? |
| タケ: 確かに顔は可愛かったよ。けど、最初に、「こんにちは、愛です」って、自己紹介だけして、すぐに、携帯メールを打ち出したんだぜ。 |
| TAKE: Well, she is cute. But after she introduced herself with "Hello, my name is Ai", she started writing emails on her phone! |
| ヒデ: 友達にメールしてたのか？ |
| HIDE: She started emailing her friends? |
| タケ: いや、俺にメールしてたんだよ。一緒にいるのに、メールのやり取りだけ。。。一緒に食事をしているのに、俺の顔も見ないんだよ。 |
| TAKE: No, she was emailing me! Although we were right next to each other, our communication was email only. Even though we were eating together, she wouldn't even look at me. |
| ヒデ: そんなデート、聞いたこともないよ。じゃ、食事の注文はどうしたんだよ。 |
| HIDE: I've never heard of that kind of date. So how did she order food? |
| タケ: 食事のオーダーもメールで来た。 |
| TAKE: Her order came by email. |
| ヒデ: はぁ？食事の後は？食事の後はどうしたんだ？また、会うんだよな？ |
| HIDE: Huh? What about after dinner? What did you do afterwards? You're going to meet her again, right? |
| タケ: レストランを出た後に、メールが来て「今日はありがとう。お互い別のメル友を探した方がよさそうね。」だって。 |
| TAKE: After we left the restaurant, I got this email from her - "Thank you for today. Perhaps we should start to look for new email-friends." |
| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Naomi: すごいですね、これ。かわいそう。 I feel sorry for タケ。 |
| Peter: なんでですか、 Why? |
| Naomi: え、ピーターもしかして読んでないの？ |
| Peter: あともう少し、ちょっと待ってください。 |
| Naomi: ちょっと信じられないですよね、ユウイチさん。 |
| Yuichi: はい。皆さん、ピーターさん、読んでないようですよ。 |
| Naomi: ひどいね。 |
| Peter: So it seems like I haven’t read it or |
| Naomi: だってね、このスクリプト先週渡したのに読んでないんですよ。 Even though I gave this script to Peter a week ago he hasn’t read it. |
| Peter: いや、 そんなことないです。ただ、なんでそんなに残念ですか、 What’s wrong, I don’t understand. |
| Naomi: えー！ |
| Yuichi: これを読んだ人は皆かわいそうと思うと思います。 |
| Peter: So I don’t think that タケ is a poor guy. Everyone thinks he is a poor guy, why なんでですか。 |
| Yuichi: タケさんは初めてデートをしたのに彼女はずっとメールのやり取りをしていただけなんですよ。 |
| Peter: So the whole time she was texting him. |
| Yuichi: しかも、その食事の後、デートの後にお互い別のメル友を探した方が良さそうだねって言ってました。 |
| Peter: I think we should find some new male friends which is a kind of Japanese word メル友。メール友、メル友。 |
| Naomi: あ、そうそう。メールをよく送ったりもらったりする友達。 |
| Peter: So we should find some new email friends. でも、タケはどの格好でデートに出ましたかわからないし、 We don’t know what he showed up like. So 彼のせいじゃないですか？ I think it’s his fault. |
| Naomi: まあね。ピーターさんは女の人に甘いですからね。 You are much nicer to girls, right? |
| Yuichi: タケさんますますかわいそうです。 |
| Peter: No comment ですね。 |
| Naomi: No comment っていうことは、認めましたっていうことじゃない？ |
| Yuichi: 認めたようですね。 |
| Naomi: 認める is to admit. ね、はい。じゃあ単語いきましょう。 |
| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Naomi: 最初の単語は、後悔 |
| Peter: Regret. |
| Naomi: The first character 「後」 means later. We use the same kanji as 後で. The second character means mortifying, frustrated. なので、まあ「後悔」 |
| Peter: So to be frustrated later. |
| Naomi: そうですね。 We say 「後悔先に立たず」、先に後悔はできないですよっていうことですよね。 |
| Peter: So you can’t regret beforehand or hindsight is 20/20. |
| Naomi: ああ、そうかそうか。 Hindsight is 20/20. 後悔先に立たず。 |
| Yuichi: 次の単語は、自己紹介 |
| Peter: Self introduction. |
| Yuichi: The first two kanjis are 自己 which means one self. The others are 紹介 which means introduction. |
| Peter: So together we have self introduction. |
| Naomi: 次は、お互い |
| Peter: Mutual each other. |
| Naomi: これは、Seven is supporting each other. じゃない？ |
| Yuichi: どういうことですか。 |
| Peter: ああ、漢字の形ということですね。 Naomi Sensei is talking about the kanji. |
| Naomi: あ、はい。 The shape of kanji for お互い. You see two lines right up on top and inside there are two 7s supporting each other. Can you see it like number 7. |
| Yuichi: Like there is 7 and upside down 7. |
| Naomi: 次は、 |
| Yuichi: 大体 |
| Peter: Approximately about but can also mean in the first place. |
| Yuichi: So there are two meanings. The first meaning is just about or approximately. |
| Naomi: そうですね。大体100円です、とか大体1000円です。 |
| Peter: About a ¥100, about a ¥1000. |
| Yuichi: 約という意味ですね。約100円とか。約300円と言います。で、2つめの意味っていうのは、 In the first place, とか from the beginning っていう意味ですよね。 |
| Naomi: うん。例えば大体なんで英語を勉強しなくちゃいけないの？ |
| Peter: Why do I have to study English in the first place. |
| Yuichi: あと、大体なんで僕は君と結婚したんだ？ |
| Peter: Why do I get married to you in the first place? |
| Naomi: 大体をつけると、英語の In the first place と一緒で、強くなりますよね。 |
| Yuichi: なんかちょっと、後悔していませんか？ Because they are regretting. |
| Naomi: Regret feeling in it. |

| Yuichi: この大体の2つ目の意味ってことですね。 |
| Peter: そうですね。 |
| Naomi: You mean the second definition of 大体。 |
| Peter: Yeah in the first place. |
| Naomi: 便利ですね。次は、メールを打つ |

| Yuichi: メールをするとも言いますね。 |
| Naomi: そうですね。 To email. |

| Peter: Okay on to today’s grammar point. Now in the PDF, we have an explanation of all the points we have covered to date in the series. We have the nominalizer の, we have the conjunction のに, we also have the auxiliary adjective expressing likelihood そうだ. So you can check the previous lessons to see those. Today we are going to look at the expression 良さそう which is a word formed within the E adjective. E is attached to そうだ. So we should probably back up just a second here. Now in メル友 , too we covered そうだ which means seems like. When used with any adjective, we drop the final E and we attach そう. For example, Yuichi looks cold. |
| Naomi: ユウイチさんは寒そうだ。 |
| Peter: Naomi looks happy. |
| Yuichi: 幸せそうだ。 |
| Peter: She looks happy but there are a couple of exceptions and we did go over them. We are going to take a look at the E adjective good. Naomi Sensei that is. |
| Naomi: いい |
| Peter: Which means good. Now if we want to say looks good, this changes. The pattern is usually to drop the last E and attach そう but for this particular case, いい – Good becomes |
| Naomi: よさそう。 Not いさそう。 |
| Peter: Probably the easier way to remember this is – there is also the adjective よい which means good. So just drop the いい but in this case, we need the さ in there. |
| Naomi: よさそう、じゃあ今日のフレーズに出てきた、「た方がよさそうです」の練習をしましょう。 Let’s practice the sentence pattern using た方がよさそうです。じゃあ、ユウイチさん、行く、 to go. |
| Yuichi: 行った方がよさそうですよ。 |
| Peter: It looks like we should go. |
| Naomi: 見る To see |
| Yuichi: 見た方がよさそう |
| Peter: It looks like we should probably take a look at it. |
| Naomi: 来る To come. |
| Yuichi: 来た方がよさそう |
| Peter: It looks like we should go. |
| Naomi: する To do. |
| Yuichi: したほうがよさそう |
