| Jessi: In this lesson, you will learn how to express your opinion with と思う. To recap, Tokugawa Kimi-san went to the detective's office, and she asked him to find her colored carp that went missing. |

| Yuichi: 今日みたいに、「探偵」とか。あと、刑事がよく聞き込みをします。 Private detectives and police detectives. |
| Naomi: ストーリーでは、探偵が、近所の人に聞き込みをしていたみたいですけど、あまりいい情報はもらえなかったみたいですね。 |
| Jessi: They investigated, but they weren't able to get any good information or leads this time. |

| Yuichi: The first word we look at is 謎 |
| Jessi: mystery, puzzle, enigma |
| Yuichi: わからないもの、ふしぎなもの、という意味ですね。 |
| Naomi: この漢字面白いですよね。左側は、「言う」to sayですよね。右側は、「迷う」to get lost と言う意味ですかね。 |
| Yuichi: この迷うという漢字はには、米 riceがありますね。これは、お米は小さいです。なので、とても小さくて見えない。どこにありますかー。どこに、あっ、迷うって言うことですね。get lost. |
| Jessi: So the right hand side radical in 迷う consists of two parts. And 迷う has the kanji for rice. The rice is very small, so you can hardly see it. And you get lost looking for it. So that's how you can remember. |

| Jessi: The focus of this lesson is expressing your opinion or what you think about something using the class 1 verb omou (思う), meaning "to think". To express your opinion in Japanese, you can attach to omou (と思う) to an informal sentence or phrase. と is a quotation-marker used at the end of a quote, and omou (思う) is a verb that means "to think". Of course the corresponding masu form is (思います). |
| Naomi: So ---と思う or ---と思います means I think that ----such and such. |
| Jessi: Could you give us an example from the dialog? |
| Yuichi: 変な人はいなかったと思います。 |
| Jessi: "I don't think there was anybody suspicious." |
| Yuichi: 変な人(Jessi, suspicious person) は (topic marking particle) いなかった(didn't exist, wasn't there) と思います(I think that) |
| Jessi: So literally, "Suspicious person - didn't exist - I think." Of course in natural English , we say "I don't think that there was anybody suspicious." |
