| Natsuko: 聞いたことないですけどね。 |
| Naomi: Katakana is only used in Japan right? |
| Peter: Yeah. |
| Natsuko: So international Katakana. Does it make sense? |
| Naomi: 誰かが作ったんだと思います。 |
| Peter: So it’s made up. あった方がいいと思いますけど。 It should be. |

| Peter: Yes. The Ministry of Japan. |

| Peter: Anyway, now just want to let you know お盆 is right around the corner. So we are going to do something really interesting. If you remember, last year we had some scary stories. |
| Natsuko: Oh yes. |
| Naomi: And I think we are having these scary stories again. |
| Peter: What is the name of them? |
| Naomi: 怪談。 |
| Peter: So scary stories. So be sure to check those out. And again, those are for premium members. Okay now there is no point – particular grammar point we are focusing on in this particular lesson. This is a lesson to reinforce what we have learned. |
| Naomi: And read Katakana. That’s the whole point. |
| Peter: Yes so you are going to find a lot of things that would normally – would be in normal Japanese but written in Katakana and there is a reason for this. We will kind of let you know afterwards. The conversation is between? |
| Naomi: おじいさん、おばあさん、それからもう一人。 |
| Peter: And we are not going to tell you who that is. You are going to have to listen to today’s conversation. So the conversation is between these three people. The mystery guest speaks polite Japanese, the grandmother speaks polite Japanese even with grandfather which is a sign of extreme politeness in a different era in the past even though there was a intimate relationship between the husband and wife, sometimes the wife would speak polite Japanese and the husband, the おじいさん is speaking informal Japanese. Okay here we go. |

| Peter: So we are having a little fun with the Japanese elevating the level to ask very probing questions. でも丁寧で良かったですね。 |
| Naomi: そうですね。でも、 I am not the one who named the alien Peter. That’s Maki. Maki named alien Peter. |
| Peter: ああ、いつも他の人のせいにしますね。ていうか、ナオミ先生の爪は良さそうですね。 |
| Naomi: そうですね、 I don’t bite my nails or I have clean nails. |
| Peter: 気持ち悪いですね。 |
| Natsuko: Who bites nails? |
| Naomi: アメリカ人とかよく噛まないですか？ |
| Peter: 昔私もやってました。 |

| Peter: So most likely if you have the PDF, please check it out or if you click the center button of your iPod or touch your iTouch and you see today’s conversation, you probably wonder why a large portion of it is written in Katakana. |
| Natsuko: 日本語では外国から来た言葉をカタカナで書くという Tradition がありますね。 |
| Naomi: そうですね。 |
| Peter: So there is a custom to take loanwords, take foreign words and when they are adapted into Japanese, they use katakana and katakana is ever-growing. Speaking about computers, it’s almost all katakana with a couple of particles. |
| Natsuko: そうですね。それで、日本語でも外国の人が喋ってるということを説明したい時にわざとカタカナを使ったりするんですよね。 |
| Naomi: そうですね。 |
| Peter: And it’s also used especially on TV as subtitles when a foreign person is speaking to basically – there could be few reasons. One to establish that it’s a foreign person speaking. Two, if there is a heavy accent, it’s usually written in katakana. |
| Naomi: If the person has heavy accent, we tend to write in katakana かな、という感じも。 |
| Natsuko: そうですね、 |
| Naomi: そうそう。 |
| Natsuko: カタカナデ、カキマスネ、という感じですかね。 |
| Naomi: ナツコさんが壊れた。そういう感じです。 |
| Peter: たまに若い日本人でもカタカナも使います。 |
| Naomi: 若い子の言葉とかはそうかもしれないですね。 |
| Natsuko: そうですね。だから、外国語、あと外国人が喋る日本語、それから新しい言葉というのが大体カタカナで書かれることが多いです。 Anything that doesn’t sound like traditional Japanese. |
| Naomi: ああ、そうかもしれないですね。 |
| Peter: Hence foreigners, young people, people speaking in a dialect. |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Naomi: 最初の単語は、 |

| Peter: UN. |
| Natsuko: これは、 Abbreviation ですね。本当は国際連合と言います。 |
| Peter: So the full phrase for United Nations is |
| Naomi: 国際連合。 |
| Natsuko: 国際 which means International and 連合 Alliance. |
| Peter: And of course, it gets shortened especially in conversation to |
| Natsuko: 国連 |
| Naomi: 次は、事務局 |
| Peter: Bureau. |
| Naomi: 事務 means deskwork, desk job, clerical work. 局 means office, agency, bureau. なので、事務局というと The office which does deskwork. |
| Natsuko: そういうことですね。 |
| Naomi: 国連、今日のダイアログでは、 In today’s dialogue, we had 国連事務局 |
| Peter: The United Nations Secretariat. |
| Naomi: が、出てきましたね。 |
| Natsuko: そうですね。 |

| Peter: Earth. |
| Natsuko: I think kanji used for this word is very interesting because 地 means ground and 球 means ball, a sphere. |
| Peter: Yeah makes sense, very logical. |
| Naomi: これ、面白いなあっていつも思うのは、「世界中」 In the world でも、「地球中」は言わなくて、「地球上」なんですね。 |
| Naomi: On the earth. |
| Natsuko: はい。確かにそうですね。地球の中にはいないんですね。 |
| Naomi: うん。地球の中には私たちはいないんです。 |
| Natsuko: Surface にいるだけなんですね。 |
| Naomi: だから地球の上。だからまあ、英語と一緒ですかね、これはね。 |
| Natsuko: そうですよね。 |
| Peter: So it’s the same as English. |
| Naomi: 次は、爪 |
| Peter: Nail as in fingernail or toenail. |
| Natsuko: 次は宇宙人 |
| Peter: Alien, space alien. |
| Natsuko: これは、「宇宙」 means the universe or outer space and 「ひと（人）」 means person or people. So people in the universe. |
| Naomi: そうですよね。 |
| Natsuko: でも、Astronauts のことは宇宙人とは言わないですよね。 |
| Naomi: ああ。 |
| Peter: ああ、面白いですね。 So you don’t call an astronaut 宇宙人 even though it’s a person in space. |
| Natsuko: Yes. So it means actually extraterrestrial. |
| Peter: Yeah someone who originated from somewhere out there. |
| Natsuko: うん。ということですよね。 |
| Naomi: 次の単語は、星 |
| Peter: Star. |
| Naomi: 今日のダイアログの中では、「流れ星」 Shooting star という表現と、あとフレーズがひとつで出てきましたよね。 |
| Natsuko: 遠い星から来ました。 |
| Peter: I came from a faraway planet |
| Naomi: 遠い星、 Faraway planet ということで使われていましたね。 |
| Peter: But it’s actually I came from a faraway star. |
| Natsuko: そうですね。でもこういうとき、普通惑星とは言わないですね。 |
| Peter: そうですね、面白いですね。惑星 is of course the technical term for a planet and I really like the kanji for star. It’s sun on top of life. |
| Natsuko: そうですね。 |
| Peter: And it’s always said that the sun which is a star gives us life. So I think it’s a easy way to remember like a little pneumatic device. Sun and life star, yeah and even the order, you know, it’s kind of like the sun is on top and the life is below it. |
| Natsuko: なんかスピリチュアルな感じになってきましたね。 |
| Naomi: 最後の単語は、貿易 |
| Peter: Trade. |
| Natsuko: 今日の会話の中では、地球と貿易したいです |
| Peter: We would like to have trade relations with earth. |
| Naomi: おお。すごいですね。 |
| Natsuko: これはあまり普段見ない表現だと思いますけど、普通は国と国ですよね。 |
| Naomi: そうですね。貿易というときには大体 International trade を指すことが多いと思います。 |
| Peter: So for international trade, its 国際貿易. For intergalactic, どうぞ、作ってください。 intergalactic grade. |
| Natsuko: 銀河間貿易？ |

| Naomi: 「星」は使えないですね。 |

Now remember, the point of International Katakana day which is a holiday that originated in the JapanesePod101.com original holiday to promote Japanese usage throughout the world is to master katakana and as I said to Naomi Sensei the other day when we were walking down the street, katakana is actually harder for me than kanji and you may be thinking what but the better you get at Japanese, the easier it is to read kanji and Hiragana but the katakana, whenever I get to the sentence, it just – I have to go back and what is this, where are they taking it from? Hah! Where are the cut points, where is the accent? I think it’s really good practice and a great idea for us to do this. Inside the PDF, the alien speaks and everything is in katakana. So you could try to work your way through and see where the breaks are and I think it would be a really good exercise. |
