| Peter: In the previous lesson, Mr. Gomi was asking what he should give to the boss, Mr. Sakaguchi as a year- end gift. In today’s story, Mr. Hoshino and Mr. Sakaguchi are talking. |
| Yuichi: 星野さんは丁寧な日本語を、部長はカジュアルな日本を話しています。 |
| Peter: Now please notice in this lesson, Mr. Hoshino speaks formal and Mr. Sakaguchi speaks informal because the relationship changed. Now today’s grammar point is modifying clause with the passive. Naomi Sensei. |

| 星野: 実は、お客さんへのお歳暮を何にしたらいいか、ご意見を聞きたいと思いまして。。. |
| 坂口部長: そうだなぁ。子供がいる家庭なら、子供に喜ばれるお菓子がいいんじゃないか。 |
| それから、スーパーで売られていない高級な食べ物もいいな。 |
| 星野: なるほど～。 |
| 坂口部長: まぁ、取引先は仕方がないが、お歳暮は、贈るのも、贈られるのも、嫌いだね。最近、部下からもお歳暮が贈られてくるが、はっきり言って、迷惑なんだ。 |

| HOSHINO: Actually, I'd like to ask your opinion on year-end presents for my clients… |
| 坂口部長: そうだなぁ。子供がいる家庭なら、子供に喜ばれるお菓子がいいんじゃないか。 |

| MR. SAKAGUCHI: Yeah, well if it's a family with children, why don't you give them some sort of sweets the children will like? Fancy food that you can't find in a supermarket is also good. |
| 星野: なるほど～。 |
| HOSHINO: I see... |
| 坂口部長: まぁ、取引先は仕方がないが、お歳暮は、贈るのも、贈られるのも、嫌いだね。最近、部下からもお歳暮が贈られてくるが、はっきり言って、迷惑なんだ。 |
| MR. SAKAGUCHI: Well, presents are a must with the clients, but I find the whole year-end present giving and receiving thing to be loathsome. Recently, I've been getting presents from my employees, but to tell the truth, it's a bother. |
| 星野: あ、そうなんですか？ |
| HOSHINO: Oh, really? |
| 坂口部長: 第一、そのこびる態度が気に入らないんだ。私は社内のお歳暮は禁止されるべきだと思うね。 |
| MR. SAKAGUCHI: First off, I can do without that fawning attitude. I think gift-giving within the company should be prohibited. |
| 星野: すごく参考になりました！ありがとうございました。 |
| HOSHINO: You've been really helpful! Thank you. |

| Yuichi: ああ、でも、媚びる態度だと思われてしまうので、 |
| Naomi: ああ、そうですね。媚びる態度だと思われたら嫌だしね。 |
| Yuichi: そうですね。 |

| Peter: So some Japanese guys, now-a-days, they kind of take care of their eyebrows, cutting them and plucking eyebrows and putting – painting them in. |

| Peter: In this lesson, the grammar point is a modifying clause using the passive plus a noun. Naomi Sensei, what do we have first? |
| Naomi: I think the word order is different from English. In English, you say the noun first, then explain what kind of noun it is but in Japanese we explain then after a noun. |
| Peter: For example, comics which are read by kids is what you’d have in English. Now when we put this in the Japanese, the clause comes first and the book comes after. We have |
| Naomi: 子供に読まれている漫画 |
| Peter: Read by kids Manga is the literal translation but of course it’s the English equivalent of comics which are read by kids. Yuichi Sensei, how do you say Doraemon is read by kids and for those of you who don’t know, Doraemon is a very famous animation here in Japan. |
| Naomi: And comics. |
| Yuichi: ドラえもんは子供に読まれている。 |
| Peter: How do you say Doraemon is a comic which is read by kids? |
| Yuichi: ドラえもんは子供に読まれている漫画だ。 |
| Peter: Notice how the sentence, that clause precedes the noun. In this lesson’s dialogue, we had. |
| Naomi: 子供に喜ばれるお菓子がいいんじゃないか？ |
| Peter: I guess sweets which are appreciated by kids will be great. Now the most important information is |
| Yuichi: お菓子がいいんじゃないか？ |
| Peter: I guess sweets will be great. Now what kind of sweets was explained before お菓子 |
| Yuichi: 子供に喜ばれる |
| Peter: Appreciated by kids. So we take that clause, we put it into the previous sentence. I guess sweets which will be appreciated by kids would be good. I guess sweets which are appreciated by kids will be good. |
