| Peter: How do you say Thanksgiving Day in Japanese Naomi Sensei? |
| Naomi: We don’t have Thanksgiving Day in Japan. So… |
| Yuichi: But we could say 感謝祭 |
| Peter: Thanksgiving Day. |
| Naomi: Or サンクスギビングデイ. |
| Peter: Thanksgiving Day. |
| Yuichi: サンクスギビングデイは、アメリカの習慣ですか？ |
| Peter: So is Thanksgiving an American event? そうですね。 |

| Peter: So bad. I was told by my master that you are a hero at Thanksgiving. |
| Naomi: 言う |
| Peter: To say. Now to get the passive form, you have to change the final う sound to |
| Naomi: あれる |
| Peter: But verbs which end with the う sound, you have to add a W. Now when forming the passive, you usually move from the う column to the あ column but in the case of verbs that end in う like 買う like 言う, the う becomes |
| Naomi: わ |
| Peter: So we have |
| Naomi: 言われる |
| Peter: What’s another example? |
| Naomi: 買う To buy becomes 買われる to be bought. |
| Peter: And finally? |
| Yuichi: 吸う To smoke 吸われる to be smoked. |
| Peter: Okay finally we are going to touch on the troubled passive. Now we have another example in the bonus track which is indirect passive voice which is also called the troubled passive voice. There is no direct English equivalent. What it does though, it indicates that something usually negative has happened to the subject and it could be something humiliating or embarrassing or something that caused the person pain. So here we are going to go over a couple of examples of the troubled passive. Naomi Sensei? |
| Naomi: 私は七面鳥に逃げられた。 |
| Peter: The turkey escaped. The turkey got away. Now if we try to make this into a literal translation, it would be I was escaped by the turkey. |
| Naomi: And I am in Trouble. |
| Peter: Yeah but again the troubled passive which means that because the turkey got away, I am now in a tough situation, a tough spot. |
| Naomi: 例えば、 |
| Yuichi: 僕は雨に降られて濡れてしまった。 |
| Peter: So I got rained on and wet. So I was rained on and it’s expressing this severe inconvenience of being soaking wet. |
| Naomi: それからこんなのもありますね。 We have another example 私は隣の人にタバコを吸われた。 |
| Peter: I was annoyed by the person smoking next to me. So 吸われた The person’s action of smoking is annoying. The person next to me, smoking, inconvenienced me. This is a very abstract concept, very Japanese concept that one of the best ways to get used to it is just continual exposure. So we will keep on exposing you to this. |
