| Naomi: 誰も返事してくれない。ちょっと無視しないで下さい。もう皆さんお疲れなんですね。今までの話を教えて下さい、Yuichiさん。まず、わさびちゃんは誰ですか？ |
| Yuichi: わさびちゃんは、高校生です。お寿司屋さんでアルバイトをしています。 |
| Peter: So as you already know, Wasabi Chan is a high school student and she works a part time job at a Sushi restaurant. |
| Yuichi: ある日、わさびが消えて全部からしになりました。 |
| Peter: One day, all the Wasabi in the Sushi shop she worked at disappeared and actually, it didn’t disappear. It all turned to からし Mustard. |
| Yuichi: で、わさびちゃんがわさび畑に行くと、そこに校長先生がいました。 |
| Peter: So she went to the Wasabi field to find out what was going on and there she saw her principal. |
| Naomi: 校長先生は何をしていましたか？ What was he doing? |
| Yuichi: 今からわかりますよ。 |
| Peter: So today’s conversation is between a student and the principal. So Wasabi Chan, the student, speaks polite Japanese, and the principal speaks casually. |
| Naomi: 今日の文法は？ |
| Yuichi: 「ていく」です。 |
| Naomi: 「ていく」は、わさびちゃんの１で勉強しましたよね。 We have already covered the usage of ていく in lesson Wasabi 1. 今日は違う「ていく」の使い方です。じゃ、聞いてみましょう。 |

| 校長: え、わさび君?!こんな所で何しているんだね?! |
| わさび: いえー、ちょっと。。。校長こそ何しているんですか? |
| 校長: いやね、ちょっとここら辺の雑草でも取ろうと思って。。 |

| Naomi: 今度は英語が入ります。 |
| 校長: え、わさび君?!こんな所で何しているんだね?! |
| PRINCIPAL: Oh Wasabi-kun!? What're you doing in a place like this!? |
| わさび: いえー、ちょっと。。。校長こそ何しているんですか? |
| WASABI: Oh, um... I just needed to do a little something... What about you? |

| 校長: いやね、ちょっとここら辺の雑草でも取ろうと思って。。 |
| PRINCIPAL: Oh, I just thought I'd remove some weeds around here. |
| わさび: 校長、、それワサビですけど。。 |
| WASABI: Principle, that's wasabi.... |
| 校長: え!?あ、、、、わさび君、僕はね、わさびが大嫌いなんだよ!!緑だし、ツンと来るし!からしの方が断然おいしいじゃないか! |
| PRINCIPAL: What!? Oh.... Wasabi-kun, you see, I HATE wasabi!! It's green, and it stings your nose! Isn't mustard so much better!? |
| おでん、シュウマイにもちろん。。寿司にからし、そばにからしだよ!!わかるかね!? |
| Needless to say, on oden and shumai and dumpling... Think of mustard on sushi, and mustard on soba!! Do you see my point!? |

| PRINCIPAL: Whaaaaat!? You just don't get it, do you...? It's pointless to keep talking to you. |

| Naomi: 「自分勝手」っていうのは、selfish という意味ですけれども、 Yeah he is pretty selfish I guess. 寿司にからし、That’s disgusting. |
| Yuichi: Yeah I think so too. |
| Naomi: 今まで変わったおすし、何か食べたことありますか？Yuichiさん。 |
| Yuichi: はい、パイナップルが乗ったすしを食べたことがあります。 |
| Naomi: へー。 |
| Yuichi: 生クリーム付きです。 |
| Peter: So pineapples with cream Sushi. |
| Yuichi: はい、そうです。 |
| Naomi: どこで？ Where did you eat it? |
| Yuichi: 回転寿司です。 |

| Naomi: ここらへん is very casual and spoken expression. 「このへん」の方が、 I think I use このへん more than ここらへん. |
| Peter: Same here definitely. |

| Peter: ここらへん、使ったことないです。 I have never used it. Naomi Sensei は？ |
| Naomi: 私もあんまり使わないかもしれないですね。Yuichiさんは？ |

| Peter: So you don’t usually put Wasabi on おでん You use からし the hot mustard. |

| Naomi: おでんは、 Japanese Hodgepodge, is that the translation? |
| Peter: That’s right yeah. なんかおいしいおでんがあるんですけど、頭の中でイメージとしてコンビニに置いてあるおでんなんですけど、コンビニに置いてあるおでんがばい菌祭りですね。 So like in my mind, when I think of おでん, there are some really good hodgepodge, Japanese hodgepodge places but when I think of it, I think of the convenience store and the kind of bacteria pool that they sit in. It’s like a bacteria party. |
| Naomi: そうですね。 In the convenient stores, they put おでん Pot at the entrance right? |
| Peter: Yeah where everybody goes to pay and it’s just this open container. Then the おでん is just floating there and people are breathing and なんか想像できます。ばい菌が落ちています。新しい家に着きますよ。 like they land on the おでん and then the next person comes. おでん、お願いします。これとこれ。 and あとで食べますから、ちょっとね。 |
| Naomi: Now do you buy Oden at convenient store sometimes? |
| Yuichi: はい、買います。 |
| Peter: 勝ちました。 We had a bet before you came whether or not you ate Convini Oden, the Oden you can buy at a Convini store. |
| Naomi: Yuichiさんが、さっき部屋を出たときに、Peter と私で、「Yuichi はコンビニのおでんを食べるかな？」っていう話をしてたんです。で、 I said, since you live with your family, I said, no he doesn’t buy Oden at convenient store but Peter said…. |
| Peter: Peter said 貧乏な学生だから、喜んでばい菌だらけのおでんを食べます。 |
| Yuichi: But it’s tasty somehow. |
| Naomi: そうね。Some ばい菌 tastes good. |
| Peter: It’s the bacteria that makes it good. |
| Naomi: そうそうそう。たぶんね。だってヨーグルトとかおいしいし、納豆もおいしいし。That’s why Yogurt and Cheese are tasty. |
| Peter: Well okay bottom line is we come to Japan in the winter season. Now there is no Oden in the summer season. So fall to winter, you can get Oden in the Convenience store and it’s placed right there. |
| Naomi: How much is it? |
| Yuichi: Around ¥100 for one item. And these days, not only in winter but also in Summer, you can buy Oden I think. Some convenient stores sell all the time Oden. |
| Peter: Ah 冬の残り物ですね。 like left over stock. |
| Yuichi: No, no, no, no, no. |
| Peter: ほんとに貧乏ですね。 Yeah お金を与えないとね。 |
| Naomi: Pay rise を。 |
| Yuichi: Yeah so if I could get more money, then I can buy… |
| Peter: はい、いいよ。Let’s take a look at the vocab. ずうずうしいですね。Naomi先生、どう思いますか？こういう Intern は初めてだね。 |

| Yuichi: ざつ means rude, crude, useless or mixed. だから、ざっし |
| Peter: Magazine. |
| Yuichi: ざつがく |
| Peter: Trivia. So for magazine, we have the character for mixed plus |
| Naomi: Book or article. |
| Peter: Book article, so mixed articles, magazine. For trivia, we have the character for mixed plus |
| Naomi: Knowledge – mixed knowledge. |
| Peter: Trivia, useless at one thing but good at many things. |
| Naomi: Next item is とる |
| Peter: To take, to pick up. |
| Naomi: 「取る」の漢字に気を付けて下さい。とる has many homonyms and you have to use different kanji according to the meanings. So please be careful. とる as in 写真を撮る is not the same kanji as today’s 取る |

| Peter: To think, I think. |
| Yuichi: Quotation particle と often proceeds 思う. So I think that is と思う |
| Naomi: たとえば、おでんはおいしいです、だと |
| Peter: Oden Japanese hodgepodge is delicious. |
| Naomi: これを I think Oden is tasty. If you want to put I think that, that would be |
| Yuichi: おでんはおいしいと思う。 |
| Peter: I think Oden is delicious. |
| Naomi: If you want to say it in the polite way, change 思う to 思います |
| Yuichi: おでんはおいしいと思います。 |
| Peter: I think Oden is delicious. |
| Naomi: Please be careful. You cannot say おでんはおいしいです、と思う。 That sounds very strange. |
| Peter: Yeah you don’t use the polite form of the copula です with と思う。ちょっと難しいですね。なぜかと言うと、「だ」を使えますね。 |
| Naomi: Ah yeah for na adjectives and noun yes. So きれいだと思う |
| Peter: For na adjectives and nouns. |
| Naomi: はい、そうですね。Peterさんは、お金もちだと思う。So I think so this is the point right? |
| Peter: Naomi先生が、きれいだと思います。 |
| Naomi: You don’t have to put と思う. Next. |
| Naomi: Next item is ツンと来る |
| Peter: Pungent, to burn one’s nose especially when one eats Wasabi and of course, this is the inside of the nose. ツン is an onomatopoeia. This is 擬態語 which explains some kind of condition. So the ツン is I kind of think of it as a rush, a rush up to something. With intensity comes ツンと来る |
| Naomi: It depends on people’s perception but for me, Vinegar is kind of like ツンと来る |
| Peter: Ah… |
| Naomi: Or アンモニア |
| Peter: Ah…人によってですね。 |
| Naomi: まぁ、いいや。 |
| Peter: Depends on the person. Next. |
| Yuichi: だんぜん |
| Peter: Absolutely, definitely. |
| Yuichi: This word is used when you are comparing things. たとえば、私は肉より魚の方が断然好きだ。 |
| Peter: I like fish far better than meat. |
| Naomi: Of course, you can say that sentence without saying 断然 like 私は肉より魚の方が好きだ but if you put 断然 it like emphasize. You like fish much better than meat. |
| Peter: そう、質問を答えるときに、「断然好きだ」だけ言ってもいいですね。 I like it way better. |
| Naomi: たとえば、ベルギーのチョコレートは断然おいしい |
| Peter: So Belgian chocolate is way better. 断然、使ったことないです。 |
| Naomi: Hmm…それは、それはそれは。今度から使って下さい。 |

| Peter: There are several usages of this grammar point. The first one is to express some action that continues and this is what we introduced in Wasabi Kunoichi Lesson 1. The second one is a state continues changing after the certain base point in time and the base point time can be in the present or some point in the future past. Now this as opposed to te kuru which we introduced in Wasabi Kunoichi 2 which indicates that an action stated is in progress, is in progress or transition to the point in time. So てくる is something is – has been developing whereas ていく was something we will continue to develop. So Naomi Sensei, what do we have in today’s dialogue? |
| Naomi: こんな話を続けていくのは無駄だ |
| Peter: There is no use in continuing to talk about this. 続けていく To continue on 続ける to continue 続けていく to continue on. |
| Naomi: そうですね。 |
| Peter: For example, Naomi Sensei. |
| Naomi: 毎日JapanesePod101.comを聞けば、日本語が上手になる |
| Peter: So if you listen to JapanesePod101.com, your Japanese gets better になる or will get better. |
