| Natsuko: こんにちは、夏子です。 |
| Sachiko: Sachiko here. ご飯or TV. |
| Natsuko: What’s this title about? What do you think of the title 何でしょう。 |
| Sachiko: Should we select either one? So we have to make a choice between a meal or watching TV. |
| Natsuko: That’s difficult. |
| Sachiko: That’s really tough because I always do it simultaneously. Do you? Do you watch? |
| Natsuko: Yeah usually. |
| Sachiko: Yeah I thought that was normal. I thought that was standard |
| Natsuko: あ～でも、子供の頃、しかられた。 |
| Sachiko: あ、本当に？ So your mom scolded you for watching TV and eating at the same time? |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
| Sachiko: Really. So today’s conversation is between a mother and her son and like Natsuko’s family, the mother is trying to get the child to stop watching TV as he eats his dinner. So ちょっと見て行きましょうか。 Let’s look at the conversation. |

| お母さん: ご飯を食べながらテレビを見るのはやめなさい。 |
| 息子: えぇっ、サザエさんを見逃すなんていやだよぉ。 |
| お母さん: じゃあ、サザエさんを見た後で、ご飯にしなさい。 |
| 息子: えぇっ、お腹もペコペコだよ。昼から何も食べてないから、後30分も我慢できないよ。 |
| お母さん: ダメよ。ダメ。どっちかにしなさい! |
| 息子: えぇっ、お父さんはいつも新聞読みながら、ご飯たべてるよ。お母さんだって、いつも編み物しながら、テレビみてるじゃないかあ。 |

| SON: What? Daddy always reads a newspaper while eating. And Mom, you watch TV while you knit. |

| MOTHER: If you can't obey me, you're going to miss out on curry and rice. |

| Natsuko: 思い出した！子供の頃思い出した。 |
| Sachiko: You remembered when you were a kid. |
| Natsuko: It was exactly like this. |
| Sachiko: Oh my goodness! Did she threaten to not give you dinner? |
| Natsuko: Not actually but you know, the TV was off. |
| F1: Oh that’s like a decisive measure. That’s probably better for a kid’s education but… |
| Natsuko: Maybe. |
| F1: My parents gave up on me a long time ago. |

| Sachiko: To miss, to overlook, to leave at large. |
| Natsuko: (slow)みのがす (natural speed) 見逃す |
| Sachiko: So in the conversation, the boy was saying that he doesn’t want to miss サザエさん which is |

| Sachiko: Right. What is サザエさん？ |
| Natsuko: It’s a TV anime program and it’s quite popular. |
| Sachiko: Yeah it’s been around for a very long time right like 30 years maybe? |
| Natsuko: Maybe more. |
| Sachiko: Oh my goodness! |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
| Sachiko: Wow so it’s about a three generation family |
| Natsuko: Yes |
| Sachiko: Living together in one house and there is a lot of interaction. |
| Natsuko: Yeah. But it used to be a very typical Japanese family. |
| Sachiko: Yeah. |
| Natsuko: Back in the 昭和 era. |
| Sachiko: Right. The next vocabulary please. |
| Natsuko: お腹 |
| Sachiko: Stomach. |
| Natsuko: (slow)おなか (natural speed) お腹 |
| Sachiko: How do you say I am hungry in Japanese? |
| Natsuko: お腹がすいた |
| Sachiko: So literally that means the stomach is empty. I am hungry. So if you are full, what would you say? |
| Natsuko: お腹がいっぱい |
| Sachiko: Which is literally the stomach is full. The next word please. |
| Natsuko: 我慢 |
| Sachiko: Patience, endurance, perseverance or tolerance, self control, self denial |
| Natsuko: (slow)がまん (natural speed) 我慢 |
| Sachiko: Now this is the word mothers love to use. |
| Natsuko: Right. They are always telling you 我慢しなさい。 |
| Sachiko: Yes. The next vocabulary please. |
| Natsuko: 新聞 |
| Sachiko: Newspaper. |
| Natsuko: (slow)しんぶん (natural speed) 新聞 |
| Sachiko: The two kanjis making up this word are new and hear. |
| Natsuko: Yes 新 and 聞. This word itself means like you know news. |
| Sachiko: The next word please. |
| Natsuko: 編み物 |
| Sachiko: Knitting, web. |
| Natsuko: (slow)あみもの (natural speed) 編み物 |
| Sachiko: 夏子さんは編み物をしますか？ |
| Natsuko: あ、私結構好きです。 |

| Sachiko: I kind of embellish that a bit and she used to do knitting while she watched TV. |
| Natsuko: テレビを見ながら編み物をする。 |
| Sachiko: So the phrase preceding ながら is what you are doing simultaneously and the phrase coming after ながら is the main action. I think… |
| Natsuko: Yes, usually that pattern. |
| Sachiko: Right and when you stick a verb in front of ながら, what do we have to be careful of? |
| Natsuko: You use the masu stem of the verb. |
| Sachiko: Okay. |
| Natsuko: So when the verb to eat 食べる |
| Sachiko: Yes. |
| Natsuko: The masu form is 食べます. So when you are doing something while you are eating, you say 食べながら you drop masu |
| Sachiko: Okay. |
| Natsuko: And the stem is 食べ. So you add ながら to the stem 食べ. 食べながら. |
| Sachiko: So let’s try another example with the verb read 読む what’s the masu form for this? |
| Natsuko: 読みます |
| Sachiko: And we take away the ます and we stick ながら. 読みながら。 While reading. So let’s look at some sample sentences |
| Natsuko: 毎朝テレビを見ながら味噌汁を飲みます。 |
| Sachiko: I drink Miso soup every morning while watching TV. The next sample sentence please. |
| Natsuko: いつもデスメタルを聞きながら宿題するよ。 |
| Sachiko: I always do my homework while listening to Death metal. Let’s look at another pattern. The phrase ながら can be used in a different pattern as well. Can you explain that Natsuko san? |
| Natsuko: Oh so, it can be used for actions done simultaneously but it also can mean although. |
| Sachiko: So it’s linking two clauses that show opposite ideas or opposite things. |
| Natsuko: Oh yes right. So it’s like you know, while this and this or although this and this. |
| Sachiko: Right. |
| Natsuko: 木下さんは肝臓が弱いと言いながら、よく夜遅くまで酒を飲みすぎてる。 |
| Sachiko: Uh this is really bad. So Kinoshita, despite saying that he has a weak liver, often continues drinking until late into the night. That’s bad. |
| Natsuko: But maybe you hear this quite often. Maybe, maybe. So in this case, と言いながら despite saying this and that, his actions kind of contradict what he is saying. |
| Sachiko: Yes. |
| Natsuko: So it’s two opposing causes connected by the word ながら。肝臓が弱いと言いながら、飲みすぎる。 |
| Sachiko: Yes. Let’s look at the next sentence. |
| Natsuko: あの先生は学生には遅刻をしないように、と言いながら自分はいつも遅れて学校に来る。 |
| Sachiko: Ah another typical scene. That teacher despite telling his students not to be late is often late for school himself. |
| Natsuko: Not good, not good. |
| Sachiko: No, no. |
| Natsuko: Yeah but yeah, this usage of ながら is often used for this kind of content. |
| Sachiko: Yes. |
| Natsuko: と言いながら |
| Sachiko: Despite saying this and that, his actions kind of contradict what he says. |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
