| Natsuko: 昨日は何してたの？来なかったじゃない。 |
| Peter: ちょっと… Like well I had something better to do. You don’t really want to say the answer but you want to acknowledge that you heard the question. |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
| Peter: Sometimes in business or sometimes when dealing with office workers, if you ask someone a very – for something that’s very difficult for them to do or to give, they may respond with this. Natsuko-san 私の代わりに仕事をやってくれませんか。 |
| Natsuko: いや、それはちょっと… |
| Peter: So Natsuko-san, can you do the work instead of me and in this case, I think we could translate ちょっと as difficult to do. Natsuko-san, one more thing I’d like to cover before we move on. The telephone number we gave in today’s conversation. Can you just read that back? |
| Natsuko: 060-3321-3412 |
| Peter: Now the first three 060. Does this number exist in Japan? |
| Natsuko: I don’t think so. |
| Peter: Now we put this in here intentionally so that we don’t know what our listeners will do. Someone might try and call a legitimate number. |
| Natsuko: Oh yes. |
| Peter: So Natsuko-san, can you just give us the numbers that do exist in Japan. |
| Natsuko: For example. |
| Peter: When you see zero something zero. |
| Natsuko: Uhoo… |
| Peter: You pretty much automatically recognize that it’s a mobile device. |
| Natsuko: Oh yes. |
| Peter: And originally with mobile devices, it was what numbers. |
| Natsuko: 090 |
| Peter: 090 but what happened was |
| Natsuko: They ran out of numbers. |
| Peter: Yeah they ran out of numbers. So then they switched to. |
| Natsuko: 080 |
| Peter: 080 and now some people use PHS. So they also have. |
| Natsuko: 070 |
| Peter: Yeah so, so many numbers. They are now down to 060 yet but who knows. All right. So just when you see those numbers, you can recognize automatically it’s a mobile device. Now if it’s a landline, what numbers would we have? |
| Natsuko: In Tokyo, it’s 03. |
| Peter: Yeah. It’s usually 0, a number other than 0 and then continuing on with a number other than 0. |

| Peter: On to today’s grammar point. Megumi-san, what do we have for today’s grammar point? |
| Megumi: We have ぱなし as in 開けっぱなし. It’s an improper form that shows that something or someone is left in a continuous state. In this conversation, we have 鳴りっぱなし means still ringing. |
| Peter: Natsuko-san, can you give us the line from today’s conversation? |
| Natsuko: とても後悔しています。今日ずっと鳴っています。本当に、鳴りっぱなし。 |
| Peter: I really regret it. It’s been ringing all day. Ringing nonstop, the phone just won’t stop ringing. Now as Megumi-san said, 開けっぱなし is another one that you hear quite a lot. |
| Megumi: あ、ずっと開けっぱなしだった。 |
| Peter: The door was open the whole time. And notice here after the ぱなし, we have the plain past of the copula だった. So Natsuko-san, can you give us an example of ぱなし with the polite form of the copula. |
| Natsuko: ドアが開けっぱなしです。 |
