| Natsuko: Sure. 七味とうがらし is a Japanese spice mixture that includes seven different spices with chilli pepper as the main ingredient. |

| Natsuko: It's commonly used on soba, udon, or yakitori, which is Japanese-style grilled chicken. |
| Becky: I see. If you want to try it, you can buy it very easily. It’s a popular food souvenir, so you can buy it from Japan's famous shrine festivals and tourist sites. |

| Becky: meaning "What do you think about it?” or “How is it?". |
| Natsuko: どう is equivalent to "how" in English. So どうですか literally means "How is it?". |
| Becky: If you want to ask how something is, you can use this phrase. Natsuko, can you give us an example using this word? |
| Natsuko: Sure. When you start working at a Japanese company, your friend might ask you しごとはどうですか。 |

| Becky: You can simply add the item’s name, then say. |

| Becky: You can use this pattern when you make a suggestion. Like when you and your friend need to decide what to eat for dinner, you can say “how about pizza?” |

| Becky: Okay, what's the next phrase? |
| Natsuko: よかったですね。 |
| Becky: meaning "That's great” or “Lucky you." |
| Natsuko: よかった is the past tense of よい, which means "good". Here, you can add です to make the phrase polite. ね(ne) is an ending particle used to make a tag question. |
| Becky: You can use this phrase when you want to say “that's great" or "lucky you" in a situation when someone tells you news that is good for that person or for someone else, and you’re happy to hear it. Natsuko, can you give us an example using this word? |
| Natsuko: Sure. Let’s say your co-worker asked you ぐあいは、どうですか。 |
| Becky: “How are you?” |
| Natsuko: .. and you said はい、もうだいじょうぶです。 |
| Becky: “I'm OK now.” |
| Natsuko: Then the other person will smile and say.. よかったですね。 Or if it’s between friends, you will hear よかった。 Both mean “That’s great.” |

| Natsuko: It’s a long sentence, but it also contains the key point for this lesson - をもらえますか。 |
| Becky: This phrase means something like “can I have..” and it makes your requests very polite. |
| Natsuko: をもらえますか。を is the object-marking particle. もらえます is the potential form of the verb もらう meaning “can receive.” |
| Becky: Using this pattern, can you tell us how to say “Can I have a menu?” |
| Natsuko: メニューをもらえますか。メニュー is the menu at a restaurant, then you can simply say をもらえますか。 メニューをもらえますか。 |
| Becky: “Can I have a menu?” or literally “Can I receive a menu?” What about “Can I have the receipt?” |
| Natsuko: レシートをもらえますか。 “Receipt” is レシート. レシートをもらえますか。 |

| Natsuko: おはし is the word meaning “chopsticks” so you can say.. おはしをもらえますか。 |
