Tanaka: Oh I see. |
John: Also I’m going to have a BBQ with my friends on Sunday. |
Tanaka: You will be busy. |
John: Oh yes. This is my first time attending a wedding in Japan. I’m looking forward to that. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Becky: Natsuko, I’ve heard that there are several types of weddings in Japan. |
Natsuko: That’s right - There are four types of Japanese weddings - Shinto, Christian, Buddhist, and non-religious civil weddings. But Shinto-style and Christian-style weddings are the most common. |
Becky: What is the main difference between them? |
Natsuko: A Shinto-style wedding is a traditional Japanese ceremony that is performed by a Shinto priest and held in a shrine. Nowadays, this traditional wedding is becoming less popular and many couples are going for the Christian-style today. |
Becky: And where do wedding ceremonies usually take place? |
Natsuko: It's common to hold ceremonies at a hotel or ceremony hall. Many hotels and halls have Shinto or Christian chapel facilities. |
Becky: Okay, let’s move on to the vocab. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Becky: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is.. |
Natsuko: はじめてです |
Becky: meaning "It's my first time." |
Natsuko: はじめて means "first time" and です is a copula. |
Becky: You can use this phrase when you want to express that you’re doing something for the first time, if it's clear what you are talking about from the context. For example, if someone asked you.. |
Natsuko: 日本ははじめてですか。 |
Becky: “Is your first time visiting Japan?” You could say.. |
Natsuko: はい。はじめてです。 |
Becky: “Yes. It's my first time." if it’s your first visit to Japan. Okay, what's the next phrase? |
Natsuko: たのしみです |
Becky: meaning "I'm looking forward to it. " You can use this phrase to express that you are looking forward to something. |
Natsuko: Right. たのしみ is a noun meaning "enjoyment" or "pleasure" and when it's followed by です, it makes a set phrase meaning "I'm looking forward to it." |
Becky: For example, if you plan to go to Japan next week, you can say.. |
Natsuko: らいしゅう、にほんに行きます。 |
Becky: “I'm going to Japan next week.” Then you can simply add... |
Natsuko: たのしみです。 |
Becky: to mean “I’m looking forward to.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask someone what he or she is going to do at a certain time, and how to answer this question. |
Natsuko: First, let’s take a look at how to ask someone what he or she is going to do. |
Becky: Let’s imagine you want to ask “what are you going to do this weekend?” First you say, “this weekend”, |
Natsuko: 今週末 |
Becky: Then add a topic marking particle |
Natsuko: は |
Becky: and finally add “what are you going to do” |
Natsuko: 何をしますか。 |
Becky: Altogether, “What are you doing this weekend?” is, |
Natsuko: 今週末は何をしますか。 |
Becky: The pattern to ask “what are you going to do [at a certain time]?” is, |
Natsuko: [certain time] + は、何をしますか。 |
Becky: Using this pattern, how do you ask “What are you going to do this Saturday?” |
Natsuko: “This Saturday” is こんしゅうのどよう日. So you can say.. こんしゅうのどよう日 は、なにをしますか。 |
Becky: Now let’s make a more specific question."What are you going to do during summer vacation?" |
Natsuko: It's simple. Just replace こんしゅうのどよう日, meaning “this Saturday” with “summer vacation”夏休み and say.. 夏休みは、何をしますか。 |
Becky: “What are you going to do during summer vacation?" |
Natsuko: Unlike English, あなたは is dropped from this question sentence, as it's already understood that you are the one being asked. It sounds more natural if you don’t say あなた in a Japanese question. |
Becky: I see. Okay. Now let's talk about how to answer the questions. |
Natsuko: The formation is almost the same as the question. |
Becky: For example, for "I'm going to have a party this Friday night," you can say, |
Natsuko: こんしゅうの金よう日は、パーティをします。 |
Becky: ..The formation is, |
Natsuko: The time for the event, in this case, this Friday ,今週の金曜日 plus the topic marking particle, は and then you describe what to do, such as, “I will have a party”, パーティをします. |
Becky: So simply, time, topic marking particle, and what you do. Using all the patterns that we learned in this lesson, let’s make a short dialogue. “What are you going to do next Saturday?” |
Natsuko: In Japanese, that’s こんどの土よう日は何をしますか。 |
Becky: A possible answer is "I'm going to play tennis next Saturday." |
Natsuko: こんどの土よう日は、テニスをします。 |
Natsuko: So listeners, こんどの土よう日は何をしますか。 Leave us your answer in the comments! |
Outro
|
Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye! |
Natsuko: またねー |
