| Okay let’s draw the kanji for this lesson. This kanji means early. |
| We are going to have a trick for memorizing this kanji in just a minute but let’s first look at the reading. |
| Remember, there are two readings in Japanese kanji? One is 音読み (on'yomi) the On reading, the other one is 訓読み (kun'yomi) the Kun reading. Long story short, the On reading comes from Chinese and the Kun reading comes from Japanese. |
| Now let’s look at the On reading for today’s kanji. The On reading for this kanji is ソウ (sō) and the Kun reading for this kanji is はや (haya) はや (haya) as in はやい (hayai) . |
| Now remember the trick that I was telling you about? Let’s look at that now. I need a green pen again. |
| The top part as we already learned is the sun. The bottom part which we also learned is the kanji for 10. The sun is already up in the sky by 10 o’clock. Well, maybe 10 AM is not that early for some people. But you get the picture. |
| Now let’s learn how to draw this kanji. Pay attention to the stroke order, it’s very important. The sun and 10. Let’s try it one more time. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. |
| Now let’s look at some sample words. |

| The On reading for this kanji is sou. Here we have そうしゅん (sōshun). Now remember this kanji for spring. So this means early spring. |
| Next we have the Kun reading. The Kun reading for this kanji is haya as in はやい (hayai) which means early. |
