Jessi: Hi, everyone! Welcome to the new JLPT N3 Prep Course Lesson 9. I'm Jessi, and I'm here in the studio joined by... |
Naomi: こんにちは、みなさん。直美です。Hello, everyone! Naomi here. Jessi-san, we've covered all of the sections of the JLPT, except one! |
Jessi: That's right. The Listening Comprehension section! |
Naomi: Listening is known as 聴解 in Japanese. 聴解は40分間です. |
Jessi: The listening section lasts 40 minutes. |
Naomi: もんだいは28くらいです。 |
Jessi: According to the JLPT homepage, there will be about 28 questions in the Listening section. |
Naomi: 聴解はもんだい1からもんだい5までありますが、このレッスンではもんだい1を勉強します。 |
Jessi: On JLPT N3, there are 5 different types of questions in the Listening section, and in this lesson we will be focusing on Question 1. |
Naomi: もんだい1では、短い文をきいて、質問に答えます. |
Jessi: In Question 1, you will listen to a short conversation or paragraph and answer the questions. We'll do some actual practice questions in this audio lesson, but first let's look at Question 1 in more detail. |
*Instructions* |
Jessi: Naomi-sensei, can you please read us the instructions? |
Naomi: Sure. 問題1では、まず質問を聞いてください。それから話を聞いて、問題用紙の1から4の中から、正しい答えを一つえらんでください。 |
Jessi: In Question 1, listen to the question first, and then listen to the conversation or paragraph to find the answer. Choose the best answer from 1 to 4. |
Naomi: The question they are asking you, as well as the conversation, are not printed in the booklet. |
Jessi: That's right. Only the answer choices are printed in the booklet. So you need to listen very closely for what they are asking for. |
Naomi: そうですね。よく聞いてください。 |
*Types of Questions* |
Jessi: Now, In もんだい1, a lot of the conversations contain phrases that are giving instructions, making a request, or making a suggestion, right? |
Naomi: そうです, right. You will most likely be asked about the future actions of one of the speakers. |
Jessi: So you should keep an ear open for phrases used for instructions and suggestions. Let's review some here. |
Naomi: Sure! First, informal expressions asking one to do something. The te form plus くれる?and te form plus もらえる? |
Jessi: For example... |
Naomi: このノート、会議室に持って行ってもらえる? |
Jessi: Could you take this notebook to the conference room? |
Now, you can also attach their negative forms くれない and もらえない to the te-form right? |
Naomi:あ、そうそう。For example you can say このノート会議室にもっていってもらえない? or もって行ってくれない? |
The meaning is the same. |
Jessi: Now, to make a formal request, you just use the formal version of the words we just gave you, and add the question marking particle か。 |
Naomi: The te form plus くれますか?or the negative of that, くれませんか? Also, the te form plus もらえますか?, or the negative of that, ~てもらえませんか? |
Jessi:If you want someone to take a photo, what would you say? |
Naomi: 写真をとってもらえますか。 |
Jessi: Could you take a picture? Again, もらえますか? could be replaced with any of the others. And lastly, honorific expressions! |
Naomi: Yes, honorific expressions may show up on level N3. They are... The te form plus くださいますか?or the negative of that, くださいませんか? Also, the te form plus いただけますか?, or the negative of that, ~いただけませんか? |
Jessi: So if you want to ask someone to wait for you super politely, you'd say...待っていただけませんか。 |
Naomi:そうです! |
Jessi:Let's review what we explained. |
When you're talking to your friend you'd say |
Naomi:待ってもらえない? |
Jessi:A little more polite situation... |
Naomi:待ってもらえますか。 |
Jessi:Then to your boss or client, you'd say |
Naomi:待っていただけませんか。 |
Naomi: Okay, now let's move on to the Practice questions.このレッスンでは、2番をときましょう。 |
Jessi: We’re going to do Practice Question 2. Now is the time to get out the Lesson Notes. The answer choices are printed in there, and you'll need to see those to do the questions. Are you ready? Let's get started! |
[Question 2 - アナウンス:男の人と女の人が電話で話しています。女の人はこのあとすぐ何をしなければなりませんか。] |
Jessi: Okay, did you get the answer? First of all, Naomi-sensei, what was the question asking? |
Naomi: 女の人はこのあとすぐ何をしなければなりませんか。 What does the woman have to do after this? |
Jessi: And the correct answer was? |
Naomi: Choice 2. 黒いファイルをかいぎしつにもっていく。 |
Because the man said じゃ、いそいで、そのファイルを会議室にもってきてくれる? |
Jessi: Could you hurry and bring it to the conference room? |
Naomi: 会議室 is conference room, and 持ってきてくれる is making a request - like the phrases we just went over earlier. |
Jessi: Let's quickly go through the other answers. |
Naomi: 黒いファイルをさがす。 |
Jessi: "Look for the black file". This is what she is already doing in the conversation, so it is incorrect. |
Naomi: Right, the same goes for the last answer choice 鈴木さんのひきだしをあける。 |
Jessi: "Open Mr. Suzuki's desk drawer." Right, she opened it when she was looking for the file, so this is also incorrect. Remember that the question is asking what she is going to do. |
Naomi: The other answer choice was ランチをかいにいく。 |
Jessi: "Go and buy lunch." Now.. at the end of the conversation, lunch was mentioned, right? |
Naomi: Yes, Suzuki-san said こんど、ランチおごるから。 |
Jessi: "I'll treat you to lunch next time." This is because the woman is going to all the trouble to find the file and take it to the conference room.Which leaves us with the correct answer. |
Naomi: She’s going to take the file to the conference room. Okay, let's move onto the next question.次は5番を見てください。 |
Jessi:Now please look at question 5. |
[Question 5 - アナウンス:女の人と男の人がはなしています。男の人は母の日に何をしますか。] |
Jessi: Okay, did you get the answer? Naomi-sensei, what was the question asking? |
Naomi: 男の人は母の日に何をしますか。 What is the man going to do for Mother's Day? |
Jessi: And the answer was? |
Naomi: Choice 4. お母さんをしょくじにつれて行く。Because he said プレゼントは難しいから、しょくじにつれて行ってあげようかな。 |
Jessi: "Choosing a present is hard, so I guess I'll take her out to dinner." Let's take a look at the other choices. |
Naomi: お母さんにお花をおくる |
Jessi: "Send his mother flowers". But, this is what the woman said she was going to do. |
Naomi: Right, because she said 毎年、母にお花を送ってあげてるの。 |
Jessi: "I send flowers to my mother every year". |
Naomi: The next two choices were お母さんにスカーフを買う and お母さんにぼうしをあげる. |
Jessi: "Buy his mother a scarf" and "Buy his mother a hat". I remember hearing about a scarf and a hat... |
Naomi: Yes, these were two suggestions that the woman gave him. She said, じゃ、今年は何かプレゼント買ってあげたら?きっとおかあさん、よろこぶわよ。スカーフとか・・・ぼうしなんてどう? |
Jessi: "Well, why don't you give her a present this year? I think your mother would be really happy! Like a scarf.. or how about a hat?" なるほど。 So they were just suggestions. |
Naomi: そうです。And the last line the man says gives us our answer. うーん。プレゼントは難しいから、しょくじにつれて行ってあげようかな。 |
Jessi: "Hmmm... choosing a present is hard, so I guess I'll take her out to dinner." Make sure to listen closely all the way up until the end - many times, the answer is revealed right at the end. |
Naomi: This is very true! Make sure to listen closely to the entire question. |
Jessi: So, how were those practice questions? We have several more just like that in the bonus track of this lesson. (?) |
Naomi: So for more practice, please listen to the bonus track! |
Jessi: That's all for this lesson. Please stay tuned as we cover more listening in the next lesson! See you all next time. |
Naomi: じゃまた! |
