Jessi:Hi everyone, welcome to the New JLPT N4 Prep Course Lesson 12. I'm Jessi and I'm here in the studio joined by...
Hi everyone, Naomi here.
Jessi:In the last lesson, we covered Question 3 of the Listening comprehension section.
Naomi:
Jessi:And in this Lesson, we'll cover the last question, Question 4 of the Listening Comprehension section.
Jessi: In Question 4, you listen to a statement or question, and choose the appropriate response from the given choices.
Naomi:
Jessi: Right. There are no pictures in Question 4. Okay, let's take a look at the instructions.
**Instructions**
Jessi: Naomi-sensei, please read us the instructions for Question 4.
Naomi: Sure.
Jessi: In Question 4, There are no pictures or answer choices printed in the booklet.
Jessi: First, listen to the statement or question. Then, choose the best response to it from 1 to 3.
Naomi: So, there are no visual clues this time.
Jessi: Right. No pictures, no text, nothing. You have to rely solely on your listening skills to get the correct answer.
Naomi: Also, the statement and choices are only read once.
Jessi: Yes, so you have to listen very closely. Some of the sentences you have to respond to are questions, and some are statements. In the questions, it's important to be able to pick out the vital question word.
Naomi: Right, like どこ, where, いつ, when, どうして, why... etc.
Jessi: Here's a technique for answering these kinds of questions. Remember that you only hear the answer choices once. So, when you hear each answer, you should make a note of whether it is correct or not right away.
Naomi: That's a good idea. Otherwise, you may forgot what the answer choices are.
Jessi: Yes, so use your judgment and determine whether the choices are correct or incorrect right away. That will help a lot.
Naomi: Okay, let's get into some practice questions!
Jessi: In the first two, you must choose the correct answer to the questions.
Jessi: Here is the first question.
① wh-Q
Jessi: Okay Naomi-sensei, and the answer is?
Naomi: Choice 3. "Let's meet at the station."
Jessi: Can we hear the question one more time?
Naomi: Sure. Where should we meet tomorrow?"
Jessi: What's the key question word we should have looked out for?
Naomi: どこ, meaning where.
Jessi: So we know that the answer needs some kind of location. Choice 3 was the only one - it had 駅, the word for "train station". "Let's meet at the station." Okay, on to the next question!
② simple Q
Jessi: Okay Naomi-sensei, and the answer is?
Naomi: Choice 1. "Sure. What is it?"
Jessi: Can we hear the question one more time?
Naomi: Sure. Excuse me, do you have time right now?"
Jessi: What's the key phrase we should have looked out for?
Naomi: ありますか? meaning "do you have?" In this case, it was 時間ありますか, so they're asking "do you have time?"
Jessi: This is tricky because if you only hear the word 時間 and nothing else, you might have thought they were asking what time it was, or something like that.
Naomi: Very true. So, you need to pay close attention to the question itself.
Jessi: Okay, on to the next question! This time, you are required to choose the appropriate response for the given statement.
③ statement
Jessi: Okay Naomi-sensei, and the answer is?
Naomi: Choice 1. "Wow, how nice!"
Jessi: Can we hear the statement one more time?
Naomi: Sure. I'm going to Okinawa on a trip next week."
Jessi: What are the key words we should have looked out for?
Naomi: Hmm, I would say 旅行に行く, "to go on a trip".
Jessi: I think so too. 旅行 is a vacation, and when we hear 行く we know the person is going to go in the future.
Naomi: Right. いいですね means "that's nice", or "that's great!". So, can say it when someone tells you something fun or interesting that they're going to do.
**Ending**
Jessi: All right everyone, how did you do on the listening questions?
Naomi: We hope you were feeling confident!
Jessi: Yes, and if you'd like more practice, make sure to check out the bonus track for this lesson. There you will find more practice questions just like these. Okay, well Naomi-sensei... that does it for this lesson, and this series!!
Naomi: Yes, our JLPT N4 series has come to end!

② wh-Q
Jessi: Okay Naomi-sensei, and the answer is?
Naomi: Choice 2. "Oh, it's until 9."
Jessi: Can we hear the question one more time?
Naomi: Sure. Until what time is the test?"
Jessi: What's the key question word we should have looked out for?
Naomi: 何時まで, meaning "until what time". 何時 is "what time", and まで is "until".
Jessi: The まで part is also important in this case, because the other answer choices also had to do with time.
Naomi: Right. The question was asking 何時まで, so the answer also needed まで in it. 9時までです。"It's until 9."
Jessi: Okay, on to the next question!
⑤ statement
Jessi: Okay Naomi-sensei, and the answer is?
Naomi: Choice 2. "Ah, that's why it's so cold."
Jessi: Can we hear the statement one more time?
Naomi: Sure. I hear it's going to snow tonight."
Jessi: What are the key words we should have looked out for?
Naomi: Hmm, I would say 今夜, tonight, and 雪が降る, "going to snow".
Jessi: Yes, that's all you really need to know for this one. And so the correct answer is "Ah, that's why it's so cold."
Naomi: Right.
