INTRODUCTION
Becky: Hi everyone! Welcome back to JapanesePod101.com! This is Japanese for Everyday Life Lower Intermediate Series, Lesson 3 - Ordering Pizza in Japanese, Part 1.
Kaori:こんにちは!古橋 香織です!Hi everyone, Kaori Furuhashi here!
Becky:And I'm Becky. In this lesson, you'll learn how to order a pizza delivery over the phone.
Kaori:Beckyさんは、日本でピザの配達を頼んだことはありますか。
Becky:Yes, I have ordered pizza several times in Japan.
Kaori:電話で配達を頼むとき、いつも同じ質問をされますよね。
Becky:Yes, I’m always asked the same questions when I order delivery over the phone.
Kaori:ですから、このレッスンで必要な表現をマスターしたら、つぎは上手に注文できますね。
Becky:Right. You’ll be able to order perfectly next time if you learn the useful expressions in this lesson!
Kaori:このレッスンでは、電話番号と名前、住所を伝えるところまでの会話を勉強しましょう。
Becky:In this lesson, you'll learn how to give your phone number, name, and address.
Kaori:そして、次のレッスンで注文するときの表現を勉強しましょう。
Becky:And, in the next lesson, you’ll learn expressions for ordering food.
Kaori:では、Beckyさん、店員さんが電話に出た後、最初になんて言いますか。
Becky:Yeah, that’s what I’d like to know. What are you supposed to say after they answer the phone?
Kaori:「ピザの配達をお願いします。」と言うといいですよ。
Becky:That's simple!
Kaori:はい。簡単です。「ピザの配達をお願いします。」
MODEL DIALOG
Becky:Listen to the dialogue and participate when prompted by speaking aloud in Japanese. Use the patterns of Japanese you studied in the Beginner-level lessons. After you speak, you'll hear a model line of dialogue. Your answer does not need to be exactly the same, but do compare your response to the model line.
In this lesson, you’ll play the role of a person who orders a pizza delivery over the phone. Your goal in this lesson is to speak formal Japanese over the phone, and tell them your address correctly.
Becky:Now, call a pizza shop, and the employee will answer.
EmployeBecky:ありがとうございます。ホットピザでございます。
Becky:The employee answered the phone. Now tell them that you would like a pizza delivery.
[pause]
Person A: ピザの配達をお願いします。
EmployeBecky:ありがとうございます。ではまず、お電話番号とお名前をお願いします。
Becky:The employee said, “Thank you. Can you tell me your phone number and name?” Tell them that your phone number is 090-1234-5678, and your name is Smith.
[pause]
Person A: 090 1234 5678 スミスです。
Employee: スミス様ですね。ご住所もお願いします。
Becky:The employee confirmed your name, and asked you to tell them your address. Tell them your address is 1-3-5 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo.
[pause]
Person A: 東京都港区赤坂1の3の5です。
Employee: かしこまりました。では、ご注文をどうぞ。
VOCABULARY AND PHRASES RELATED TO THIS TASK
Becky:Here are some useful words and phrases for this task. The first word is
Kaori:配達
Becky:delivery
Kaori:配達 [slowly], 配達
Becky:This is a general word for “delivery”. To mean specifically “delivery of food”, you can use
Kaori:デリバリー
Becky:in Japanese.
Kaori:デリバリー、デリバリー[slowly], デリバリー
Becky:Here is one more word meaning “delivery of food”.
Kaori:出前
Becky:“delivery of food”
Kaori:でまえ、出前
Becky:This word is a more traditional word than
Kaori:デリバリー
Becky:to mean “delivery of food”.
Kaori:そうですね。「デリバリー」と比べると、「出前」という言葉は、食べ物の配達という意味で昔から使われきた言葉です。寿司や、ラーメン、そばの配達は、「出前」を使うことが多いと思います。
Kaori:寿司の出前
Becky:“delivery of sushi”
Kaori:ラーメンの出前
Becky:“delivery of ramen”
Kaori:そばの出前
Becky:“delivery of soba”. What about pizza delivery?
Kaori:ピザは、「ピザの配達」か「ピザのデリバリー」と言います。「ピザの出前」とは、あまり言わないですね。
Becky:It's not very common to say
Kaori:ピザの出前.
Becky:The next word is...
Kaori:東京都
Becky:“Tokyo metropolitan”
Kaori:区
Becky:“ward”
Kaori:区、区
Becky:Tokyo metropolitan
Kaori:東京都
Becky:has twenty-three wards
Kaori:区
Becky:and 26 cities
Kaori:市

Lesson focus

Becky:The key expression in this lesson is the sentence that starts the conversation on the phone - "Pizza delivery, please."
Kaori:ピザの配達をお願いします。
Becky:Practice ordering different dishes. Imagine you’re calling a sushi place to ask for delivery. Say, “Sushi delivery, please.” Use the traditional word for “delivery” here.
[pause]
Kaori:寿司の出前をお願いします。
Becky:“Sushi delivery, please.”
Becky:Next, call a ramen shop to ask for delivery. Say, “Ramen delivery, please.” Again, use the traditional word for “delivery”.
[pause]
Kaori:ラーメンの出前をお願いします。
Becky:“Ramen delivery, please.”
TIP
Becky:Do you remember how the customer read the address, “1-3-5, Akasaka Minato-ku Tokyo”?
Kaori:東京都港区赤坂1の3の5です。
Becky:The numbers in the address, 1-3-5, are read as
(Note from Simone - Make sure to read these highlighted parts out loud since the listeners can't see them.)
Kaori:1の3の5.
Becky:So, read the hyphen or “dash” as
Kaori: の
Becky:When you say an address in English, the numbers come first, then the town and city name, as in 1-3-5, Akasaka Minato-ku Tokyo. So, the order is from the specific area to the general area. But, in Japanese it’s the opposite.
Kaori:はい、日本語の住所は、英語と逆です。東京都の後、区または市の名前、そして町の名前、それから、番地の順番で言います。
Becky:When you say an address in Japanese, first you say Tokyo metropolitan
Kaori:東京都
Becky:and then the name of your ward
Kaori:区
Becky:or city
Kaori:市
Becky:such as
Kaori:港区
Becky:and then, the town name such as
Kaori:赤坂
Becky:and finally the address number. So, it goes
Kaori:東京都港区赤坂1の3の5
Becky:Practice with the address 4-1-1, Akasaka Minato-ku, Tokyo.
[pause]
Kaori:東京都港区赤坂4の1の1
PRACTICE OF DIALOG
Becky:Now, practice the dialogue using some alternative words you learned in this lesson. Use as many as possible.
Becky: Now, call a ramen shop.
EmployeBecky:ありがとうございます。ラーメン赤坂でございます。
Becky: The employee answered the phone. Tell them you want a ramen delivery.
[pause]
Person A: ラーメンの出前をお願いします。
EmployeBecky:ありがとうございます。ではまず、お電話番号とお名前をお願いします。
Becky:The employee said, "Thank you. Can you tell me your phone number and name?" Tell them that your phone number is 090-4242-5656, and your name is Smith.
[pause]
Person A: 090 4242 5656 スミスです。
Employee: スミス様ですね。ご住所もお願いします。
Becky:The employee confirmed your name, and asked you to tell them your address. Tell them your address is 3-3-3, Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo.
[pause]
Person A: 東京都港区六本木3の3の3 です。
Shop staff: かしこまりました。では、ご注文をどうぞ。
Becky:How did you do? There are actually a large number of variations you can use in this situation. Make sure to look for them in the lesson notes.

Outro

Becky:Okay, That’s all for this lesson.
Kaori:ピザのデリバリーを頼む電話の前半を勉強しましたね。電話番号や住所の伝え方は、どんな場合にも役に立ちますよ。
Becky:Right. It’s very useful to learn how to give your phone number and address. In the next lesson, you’ll learn how to complete a pizza delivery order.
Kaori:それではまた!
Becky: See you all next time!
