| Becky:I'm Becky. In this lesson, you'll learn a useful skill for telling someone a decision you’ve made - How to tell your friend what your goal is and what you're trying hard to do. |
| Kaori:Becky さん、今、何かがんばっていることはありますか? |
| Becky:Do I have something I’m trying hard to do? Umm, I run everyday. |
| Kaori:毎日ですか。それは、健康的ですね。 |
| Becky:Yeah, I realized a while ago how unhealthy my life is, and I decided to run every day. I want to tell my friend about my decision. How can I do it? |
| Kaori:毎日走るって決めたんだ。 |
| Becky:"I decided to run every day.” |
| MODEL DIALOG |
| Becky:Listen to the dialogue and participate when prompted by speaking aloud in Japanese. Use the patterns of Japanese you studied in the Beginner-level lessons. After you speak, you'll hear a model line of dialogue. Your answer doesn't need to be exactly the same, but do compare your response to the model line. |
| In this lesson, you'll play the role of a person who has decided to run every day to take on the challenge of a full-marathon next year. Your goal is to tell your friend about the decision. |
| Your Friend: 最近、元気そうだね。 |
| Becky: He said that you’ve looked good lately. Answer, “Yeah, I've been running in the morning since a while ago. That might be why.” |

| You: あ、ちょっと前から、朝、走ってるから。だからかも。 |
| Your Friend: 毎日走ってるの? |
| Becky: He asked if you run every day. Say, “Yes, I decided to run every day except for rainy days.” |
| (pause) |
| You: うん、雨の日以外は、毎日走るって決めたんだ。 |
| Your Friend: すごいね。 でも、なんで? |
| Becky: He said “Wow!, but, why is that?” Answer, “I’m thinking of taking on the challenge of a full marathon next year.” |

| Your Friend:フルマラソンか~。目標タイムは? |
| Becky: He said “Full marathon! Do you have a target time?” Answer, “I’m trying hard so that I can run it within 4 hours.” |

| VOCABULARY AND PHRASES |
| Becky:Here are some useful words and phrases for this task. The first word is, |

| Becky:"challenge" |
| Kaori:挑戦する (slow), 挑戦する |
| Becky:Next is, |

| Becky:“try hard” or “work hard” |

| Kaori:このように、「自分、私が頑張る」ときは、(E- try hard, or, work hard). という意味です。でも、相手に「がんばって」というときは、(E- good luck) という意味になります。 |

| Becky:Here are some more useful expressions to react with when you hear that your friend is trying hard to do something. The first is, |

| Becky:It’s a set phrase you can use when you want to tell someone that you really hope they can make it. Next is, |

| Becky:"I’m sure you can do it." |
| Becky:It’s a set phrase you can use when you want to make the person feel confident. Again, it’s “I’m sure you can do it.” |
| Kaori:きっとできるよ。 |

| Becky:Now, here are useful expressions for this task. The first is, "I decided to run every day except for rainy days.” |
| Kaori:雨の日以外は、毎日走るって決めたんだ。 |
| Becky:The first part of this sentence is the phrase "except for rainy days" |

| Becky:"rainy day" |

| Becky:The next part is the phrase “run every day” |
| Kaori:毎日走る |
| Becky:It's followed by a casual quotation marker, |

| Becky:after that is the past tense of a verb meaning “to decide” |
| Kaori:決めた |
| Becky:Altogether they are, |
| Kaori:雨の日以外は、毎日走るって決めた |
| Becky:In the context of your explaining or responding to someone’s question like in this dialog, you add a sentence-ending phrase to explain the situation (J- んだ). |
| Kaori:「雨の日以外は、毎日走るって決めたんだ。」 |
| Becky:The sentence structure to explain your decision is, [informal form of a verb] plus [quotation marking particle (J- って)] plus |
| Kaori:きめた んだ。 |
| Becky:Let's practice. Tell your friend that you’ve decided to stop drinking. |

| Becky:Tell your friend that you’ve decided to get up at 5 o'clock every morning. |

| Becky:"decide to do something" |
| Becky:The formation is, [a non-past informal form of a verb] plus |

| Becky: Say “I decided to go to the US.” |

| Becky:The next key expression is, “I’m thinking of taking on the challenge of a full marathon next year.” |

| Becky: Next is a phrase literally meaning “will challenge in a full marathon” |

| Becky:Next is the present progressive form of a verb meaning “to think” |

| Becky:After this is the sentence-ending phrase to explain the situation, (J- んだ). |

| Becky: Here, you can use a slightly more casual version, (J- 思ってるんだ) with (J- い)dropped. |

| Becky:The sentence pattern is, [volitional form of a verb] plus the quotation marker (J- と) plus |

| Becky:You hear a similar expression in the dialog, “I’m thinking I should try hard so that I can run it within 4 hours.” |
| Kaori:4時間以内で走れるようにがんばろうと思ってるんだ。 |
| Kaori:「がんばろう」は、 (E- Volitional form of the verb meaning “try hard” 「がんばる」 ですね。 |
| Becky:So, it uses the same pattern, (J- がんばろう) plus (J- と おもってるんだ。) |
| Becky:Let’s practice. Say, “I'm thinking of going to Japan next year.” |

| TIP |
| Becky:Now, another more casual way of saying, "I’m thinking of taking on the challenge of a full marathon next year.” |

| Kaori:最後の「いるんだ」や「るんだ」は、カジュアルな会話では、省略されることがあります。 |
| Becky:You can often omit (J- いるんだ) or (J- るんだ)in casual conversation. |
| Becky:Say in a very casual way, “I'm thinking of going to Japan next year.” |

| PRACTICE OF DIALOG |
| Becky:Now try to participate in the dialogue using some alternative words you learned in this lesson. This time you'll play the role of a person who has decided to go to the gym three days a week. Use as many of the expressions you learned in this lesson as possible. Let's get started! |

| Becky: He said that you look good lately. Answer, “Yeah, I've been going to the gym since a while ago. That might be why.” |
