| Welcome to Japanese Counters for Beginners, where you'll learn how to count all sorts of different objects in Japanese! |
| Yamamori-sensei, what counter will we learn in this lesson? |
| 階 |
| First, let's take a look at what sorts of objects can be counted with the counter. |
| When talking about a floor, you can use the counter.. |
| 階 |
| When you say the floor or storey, you can use this counter. Please note that counting |
| floors in Japanese starts with the first floor, and there's no "ground floor". This means |
| that the ground floor IS the first floor in Japanese. |
| Okay, let's count numbers 1 to 10 with this counter. |
| 一階 |
| 二階 |
| 三階 |
| 四階 |
| 五階 |
| 六階 |
| 七階 |
| 八階 |
| 九階 |
| 十階 |
| Did you notice that there were some numbers that sounded different to how they usually |
| sound? When you read the numbers 1, 3, 6 and 10, you should be careful. Yamamori-sensei |
| will give you the right pronunciation once again. |
| For number 1, it's i-kkai, not 'ichi-kai.' |
| For number 6, it's 'ro-kkai' not 'roku-kai.' |
| For number 10, it's 'ju-kkai' not 'juu-kai.' |
| Okay. Now let's take a look at some sample sentences that use this counter. |
| 私の家は、六階です。 |
| “My apartment is on the 6th floor.” |
| 受付は、二階です。 |
| “The reception is on the 2nd floor.” |
| ここは、三階です。 |
| “This floor is the 3rd floor.” |
| Now it's time for a quiz. I'm going to ask you a question in English. Answer it in Japanese. Are you ready? Make sure you use the right counter. |
| Which floor has a cinema? |
| 映画館は、七階です。 |
| Which floor are you going to? |
| 九階に行きます。 |
| Do you know how to count buildings? The answer is... |
| 一棟 |
| You can use this counter for apartment buildings and office buildings. |
| For example, よく似たマンションが三棟、ならんでいます。 |
| And this means "There are 3 very similar apartment buildings lined up." |
