Intermediate Lesson #63
INTRODUCTION
Natsuko: こんにちは、Natsukoです。
Sachiko: Sachikoです。
Natsuko: Sachikoさん、今日のテーマは「授業参観」ですよ。
Sachiko: はい。Parents Day.
Natsuko: そうですね。今日のレッスンでは、自分の子供の授業参観に行った人が、自分の妹にどんなだったか説明してる
Sachiko: 報告してるわけですね、妹さんに。
Natsuko: そうですね、そういうSituationですね。
Sachiko: So it’s a big brother reporting back to his little sister about what he saw at his younger child’s parents day.
Natsuko: で、その先生と子供たちのやり取りも入ってます。
Sachiko: はい。
Natsuko: だから、Casual formも出てくるし、Polite formも出てきますね。
Sachiko: そうですね。 This conversation consists of two components. The brother and the sister talking and the teachers and kids talking which is usually a combination of honorific and casual.
Natsuko: ですから、その場面が変わるので、そこに気を付けて聞いて下さい。
DIALOGUE
Natsuko: 次は英語が入ります。
兄: あのさあ、今日、下の子の授業参観に初めて行ったんだけど、すごく面白かったよ。
Today I went to see my kid’s parent’s day. It was really interesting.
妹: へー。どんなだったの。
Really. So what happened?
兄: みたのは算数の授業だったんだけどさあ。
I observed the math class and it went something like this.
先生: はじめにボールが3つ、ありました。あとで4つ、ふえました。ぜんぶでいくつになったかな?。。わかる人!
First we had three balls. Then we got four more balls. Now how many balls do we have in total? Who knows?
子どもたち: ハイハイハイ!
Me, me, me.
先生: じゃあ、レオ君。わかるかな。
Okay, Leo, what do you think?
レオ: はい。7です。
Seven.
先生: そう!ほんとう?ほかにだれか、ちがうと思う人は?
Is that so? Really, anyone else who thinks it is different?
子どもたち: ハイハイハイ!
Me, me, me.
先生: じゃあ、マサミちゃん。
All right, Masami.
マサミ: 先生、7です。
Teacher, it’s seven.
先生: ああ、そう。7ですか。ほかには?ほかの答えは?
I see. Seven hah! Anyone else, any other answers?
子どもたち: ハイハイハイ!
Me, me, me, me.
先生: ユウキくん、わかるかな。
Yuuki, do you know?
ユウキ: はい。7だと思います。
Yes I think it’s seven.
先生: う〜ん。7かあ。ほかには?答えわかる人は?
Okay seven hah! Anyone else, who else knows?
子どもたち: ハイハイハイ!
Me, me, me.
兄: ってまあ、ずっとこんな調子で、さらに2回も、子どもたちのハイハイハイ!が続いてさあ。驚いちゃったよ。
So the class was like that the whole time. I was surprised at the children saying me, me, me and it kept up like that two more times.
妹: なるほどね。小学一年生ってそんなもんなのよね。
Yeah first graders are just like that.
兄: まさに、異文化コミュニケーション。子どもの世界ってすごいな。
It’s truly intercultural communication. The mind of a child is amazing.
妹: お兄ちゃんも仕事ばっかりじゃなくて、たまには子どもとゆっくり過ごしなさいって。
You did nothing but work. I have told you that you should slow down and spend time with your kid.
兄: はーい。
I will.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Sachiko: Natsukoさん、この会話どう思いましたか?
Natsuko: なんか子供たち元気ですね。
Sachiko: すごい元気ですよね。声がすごかったですね。
Natsuko: そうですよね。はーい、はーい、とか
Sachiko: みなさん、耳が痛くないですか? We just want to make sure that your ears don’t hurt from all that loud screaming.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Sachiko: Okay so let’s go over today’s vocabulary. 単語をお願いいたします。
Natsuko: はい。したのこ
Sachiko: Younger child.
Natsuko: したのこ、下の子
Sachiko: So when you have more than one child, the parent would refer to their own child as the younger one or the older one.
Natsuko: そうですね、ですからOlder Childは、「上の子」ですね。
Sachiko: じゃ、3人兄弟の場合は、真ん中の子は何でしょう?
Natsuko: You said it.
Sachiko: 真ん中の子。 Okay, next vocabulary please.
Natsuko: じゅぎょうさんかん
Sachiko: Parents day.
Natsuko: じゅぎょうさんかん、授業参観
Sachiko: The next vocabulary please.
Natsuko: ちょうし
Sachiko: Pitch.
Natsuko: ちょうし、調子
Sachiko: So Natsuko san, if you are feeling good or you feel like you’ve got the energy today, what do you say?
Natsuko: 調子がいい
Sachiko: Yeah so your pitch or your energy is good.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: So what if you are tired and you are just not with it?
Natsuko: 調子が悪いAnd it’s – it can also be used for non-humans right? 今日はパソコンの調子が悪い
Sachiko: My computer is acting up today. Okay next vocabulary please.
Natsuko: いぶんか
Sachiko: Foreign culture.
Natsuko: いぶんか、異文化
Sachiko: Now this consists of two parts. The first one 異 refers to a different or outside.
Natsuko: そうですね。Something foreign.
Sachiko: Foreign to you. And the next word
Natsuko: 文化
Sachiko: Means culture.
Natsuko: そうですね。
Sachiko: So together it’s an outside culture or a foreign culture, unfamiliar culture.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: Now what’s the one thing that Japanese people love to do?
Natsuko: 異文化コミュニケーション
Sachiko: Which is like intercultural communication. It’s a big hobby of the whole ●●00:08:07
Natsuko: Hobby?
Sachiko: Yeah I think so.
Natsuko: 人気のあるTopicではありますよね。
Sachiko: 確かに。The next vocabulary please.
Natsuko: たまには
Sachiko: Once in a while.
Natsuko: たまには、たまには
Sachiko: So let’s look at a sample sentence for the term たまには
Natsuko: 家でビデオゲームばかり遊んでないで、たまには外で遊びなさい。
Sachiko: Play outside once in a while instead of playing inside doing video games all the time.
Natsuko: なんかよく聞くような気がしますね。このPhraseは。
Sachiko: Yeah. I can imagine a lot of mothers saying that to their kids.
Natsuko: Yeah.
Sachiko: Second sample sentence please.
Natsuko: テレビばかり見ていないで、たまには運動しましょう。
Sachiko: Let’s go out and exercise instead of watching TV all the time.
Natsuko: あ、これもすごくよく聞く気がする。
Sachiko: すごいよく聞く。So 今日のPhrase, たまには、 it’s very useful.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: And use it for positive and negatives.

Lesson focus

Sachiko: Let’s take a look at today’s grammar point. There is a couple of them but first one is the difference between 他には and 他のこたえは
Natsuko: ちょっと、 It sounds a little complicated.
Sachiko: Can you briefly sum it up for us? What’s the difference? How do we use it differently?
Natsuko: 他には is like anything else.
Sachiko: Right.
Natsuko: So there must be some other options.
Sachiko: Right. So you don’t need to refer to anything particular.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: You don’t have to say any other options or any other apples or it can be anything else. Natsuko: It’s like adding something to the ones already given.
Sachiko: I see. So if I’ve ordered coffee, tea, pancakes and French fries, you would say
Natsuko: 他にはよろしいですか?
Sachiko: which is a polite way of saying, anything else or anything else to go with that?
Natsuko: そうですね。
Sachiko: and I would say yes, sandwiches and spaghetti and steak.
Natsuko: 他には
Sachiko: もういいです、もういいです。No, nothing else.
Sachiko: Okay, what about 他のこたえは?
Natsuko: This specifies that any other answers.
Sachiko: Right. It’s sort of limiting what the other person is going to answer.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: So it's 他 followed by the possessive particle の followed by a noun. So if you wanted to say what about the other people
Natsuko: 他の人は?
Sachiko: Right.
Natsuko: So like someone else coming.
Sachiko: Right. Or it could be where is everybody else or what is everyone else doing. 他の人は
Natsuko: Very useful.
Sachiko: So let’s do some sample sentences that really clarify the difference between these two. When I am out shopping, I ask for an Apple, an orange, and a banana, I would say
Natsuko: りんごとみかんとバナナを下さい。
Sachiko: and the store clerk would say, anything else?
Natsuko: 他には?
Sachiko: Yes. That’s because the customer has already lined up some items and you don’t need to say 他のくだものは? because it’s implied. You listed three fruits and there you go.
Natsuko: In this case, you can also add something not fruits answering あと、トウモロコシを下さい。
Sachiko: Please give me corn as well. So if you’ve already listed some fruit, the other person will just say 他には because you know what you are talking about. The topic is fruit but if you
haven’t talked about fruit before and you are mentioning the subject for the first time and you want to say, “what other type of fruit do you have?”, you would say
Natsuko: 他のくだものは何がありますか?So this one is a 他の and noun pattern.
Sachiko: Pattern yes. Because you haven’t mentioned the topic of fruits before.
Sachiko: Grammar point #2, we have ~~の世界. In the dialogue, it was
Natsuko: 子供の世界
Sachiko: the world of children and what did the big brother think about that?
Natsuko: 子供の世界ってすごいな。
Sachiko: The world of children is just amazing.
Natsuko: I agree.
Sachiko: Yeah you think so.
Natsuko: I guess they are kind of seeing the world in a different way.
Sachiko: Now ~~の世界
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: So if you wanted to say that in the world of something particular
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: This person is very well known or this person is very famous, you can say ~~の世界
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: So if I wanted to say a very popular character in the world of anime,
Natsuko: Animeの世界では大人気のキャラクター
Sachiko: So literally translated that means, in the world of animation, a very popular character. So it’s that pattern.

Outro

Sachiko: Okay, so Natsukoさん、
Natsuko: はい。
Sachiko: Who is famous in the world of podcasts? Japanesepodの世界では有名なNatsukoさん、
Natsuko: Sachikoさんもね。
Sachiko: いやいやいや、まだまだです。私はまだ始めたばかりなんですけど、今日のレッスン、簡単なレッスンでしたが、Grammarは結構難しかったですね。
Natsuko: そうですね。でもこれ、すごく使えるPhraseだと思いますので、くり返し聞いて次は使ってみて下さい。
Sachiko: はい。So the dialogue may have seemed a little bit easy for your level but the grammar is really important and really useful. So make sure you listen to this once again with the PDF in hand and get this right because it’s really useful.
Natsuko: それじゃ、また来週。
Sachiko: See you next week.
