The first time I heard of this story was in Re: Zero, and I kinda thought that it was something made up by the author to parallel the plot. I had no idea it was a real Japanese folktale! It's so much sadder now.

‘Koe’ comes from a verb, "koeru" meaning "to go over."

なれる is the potential form of なる meaning "to become."

"一風呂" means "to take a bath quickly or without taking so much time.

"mono" of ‘Kakurenbo suru mono’ means "a person.

‘yubi tomare’ should be "yobi ni tomoare" but "ni" is omitted. This is the Japanese old custom kids were doing. When a kid proposes to do something and makes their finger up and say "kono yubi tomare", then other kids, if they agree with the proposal, come and grasp the finger.

"nidoto" is used in a form of "nidoto ~nai" and mean "never."

‘yatsukeru’ is a verb meaning "to beat out."

一番星が出てきます From the spoken dialogue it sounds like ‘hoshi’ is pronounced ‘boshi’ in this case? →　That's right!

手紙が落ちている - Which is translated as ‘what’s a letter doing in a place like this’? →　This translation is for the whole sentence, おや、こんなところに、手紙が落ちている。So, 落ちている is not translated as a strictly meaning, but the speaker's wonder why a letter is down here is translated.

I've been trying work work my way through the mukashibanashi stories, and while the Tengu one is pretty much impenetrable due to the crazy difficulty level and lack of a learning centre, this one was quite a bit more accessible.

Still, I have some questions about this one too!

やまをこえ - 'over the mountain'. 'Koe' means voice??

いつもどうやったらともだちになれるかかんがえていました - 'he was always thinking about how to become friends with them.' Which 'nareru'is this? - 慣れる, 馴れる, or 狎れる?)

一風呂 - 'bath' How is this different from 'furo'?

かくれんぼするものこのゆびとまれ。おてだま、いしけり、なんでもあるよ。みんなおいでよ。 - 'If you wanna play hide and seek, stand here. Juggling, hopscotch, we've got it all! '. 'Kakurenbo' was not in the vocab list, but means 'hide and seek', but I'm stuck on the rest of the sentance. 'Kakurenbo suru mono' What does this mean? 'Doing hide and seek thing'? 'yubi tomare' - 'this finger must stop here'?! So that's 'doing the hide and seek thing, this finger stop here!'.. Curious...!

'さもないとこうしてやるぞ' What is the verb used at the start of this sentance?

'もう二度としない' What does nidoto mean?

'わるいあおおにをやっつけIs the verb here 'yatsukeru'?

Really nice, touching-ish story indeed. However with Sakura-san's touching laughter in the background, I couldn't really cry at all!

It's nice to hear the new voices of Megumi Sotherden and Marky Star, and I really like Megumi Sotherden's voice, I could probably just close my eyes and listen to her all day along.

While closing my eyes, a funny picture showed up in my mind: JapanesPod101's crew is making a live action drama of today's story - guys as monsters and girls as children.

Can we actually have this live action? I mean, Yushi-san had a good, iie, brilliant perforance last Halloween, right? Surely doing some exercises and scaring away children wouldn't be that hard.

Just imagining the scene has already made my day .^__^:lol:
