Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to answer the question, "What are you doing during the holiday?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to talk about your holiday plans.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
ゴールデンウィークになにをしますか。 (Gōruden wīku ni nani o shimasu ka.)
ビーチにいくつもりです。 (Bīchi ni iku tsumori desu.)
Once more with the English translation.
ゴールデンウィークになにをしますか。 (Gōruden wīku ni nani o shimasu ka.)
“What are you doing for Golden Week?”
ビーチにいくつもりです。 (Bīchi ni iku tsumori desu.)
“I'm planning to go to the beach.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “What are you doing for Golden Week?”
That's:
ゴールデンウィークになにをしますか。 (Gōruden wīku ni nani o shimasu ka.)
Golden Week is a series of public holidays that take place one after the other in spring. Many people use this time to travel.
Listen to it again:
ゴールデンウィークになにをしますか。, ゴールデンウィークになにをしますか。 (Gōruden wīku ni nani o shimasu ka., Gōruden wīku ni nani o shimasu ka.)
This Japanese sentence literally translates as “Golden Week during what do you do?” But it means “What are you doing for Golden Week?".
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
[plan]つもりです。 ([plan] tsumori desu.)
This Japanese sentence translates as "[plan] intention is." But it means "I’m planning to [plan]."
For example:
“I'm planning to go to the beach.”
ビーチにいくつもりです。, ビーチにいくつもりです。 (Bīchi ni iku tsumori desu., Bīchi ni iku tsumori desu.)
