Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to answer the question, "What kind of movies do you like?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to talk about movies and ask other people about their favorite kinds of movies.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
どんなえいががすきですか。 (Donna eiga ga suki desu ka.)
ホラーがすきです。 (Horā ga suki desu.)
Once more with the English translation.
どんなえいががすきですか。 (Donna eiga ga suki desu ka.)
“What kind of movies do you like?”
ホラーがすきです。 (Horā ga suki desu.)
“I like horror movies.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “What kind of movies do you like?”
That's:
どんなえいががすきですか。 (Donna eiga ga suki desu ka.)
Listen to it again:
どんなえいががすきですか。, どんなえいががすきですか。 (Donna eiga ga suki desu ka., Donna eiga ga suki desu ka.)
"What kind of movies do you like?"
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
[type of movie]+が+すきです。 ([type of movie] + ga + suki desu.)
This Japanese sentence translates as "[Type of movie] I like." But it means "I like [type of movie]."
For example:
“I like horror movies.”
ホラーがすきです。, ホラーがすきです。 (Horā ga suki desu., Horā ga suki desu.)
