Naomi: なおみです。(Naomi desu.)
Yūichi: ゆういちです。(Yūichi desu.)
Peter: The meet up part 4. So we are back with Naomi-sensei and the alpha male 2.
Naomi: ゆういちくんですね。(Yūichi-kun desu ne.)
Peter: あ、それにしましたね。(A, sore ni shimashita ne.) We decided on ゆういちくん (Yūichi-kun), but I like ゆうちゃん (Yū-chan).
Naomi: じゃあ、ゆうちゃんでいきましょうか。(Jā, Yū-chan de ikimashō ka.)
Yūichi: はい。ニックネームはゆうちゃんです。(Hai, nikkunēmu wa Yū-chan desu.)
Peter: Okay, so we are back. So Naomi-sensei, bring us up to speed. Where are we? This is part 4, the final part.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) We are going to review all the particles which we have introduced in this series.
Peter: Which are?
Naomi: しか (shika), ばかり (bakari) and だけ (dake).
Peter: Excellent.
Naomi: 三人の人が話しています。(San-nin no hito ga hanashite imasu.) Three people are talking in the conversation.
Peter: Okay, and they are, ゆうちゃん (Yū-chan)?
Yūichi: クミ、タロウ、それからタロウのお父さんです。(Kumi, Tarō, sorekara Tarō no o-tō-san desu.)
Peter: Kumi and Tarō’s father and they are at?
Naomi: We are not sure but probably they are at タロウのお父さんのうち (Tarō no o-tō-san no uchi).
Peter: So they are at Tarō’s father’s place. この話よくわからない。(Kono hanashi yoku wakaranai.) I have no idea what’s going on here. Anyway politeness level is
Naomi: Casual.
Peter: Let’s get into today’s conversation. Here we go.
DIALOGUE
(すき焼き) (sukiyaki)
クミ (Kumi) : タロウ、さっきから、お肉ばかり食べている。ほら、野菜も食べて。(Tarō, sakki kara, o-niku bakari tabete iru. Hora, yasai mo tabete.)
父 (chichi) : ははは、タロウは野菜が嫌いで、肉しか食べないからな。(Hahaha, Tarō wa yasai ga kirai de, niku shika tabenai kara na.)
タロウ (Tarō) : 俺、野菜アレルギーがあるんだ。(Ore, yasai arerugī ga aru n da.)
クミ (Kumi) : もー、嘘ばっかり。それから、どうして、お父さんは豆腐だけ食べているの。(Mō, uso bakkari. Sorekara, dōshite, o-tō-san wa tōfu dake tabete iru no.)
父 (chichi) : あ...。(A…)
タロウ (Tarō) : お父さんは歯が悪いんだ。だからやわらかいものしか食べないんだ。(O-tō-san wa ha ga warui n da. Dakara yawarakai mono shika tabenai n da.)
クミ (Kumi) : これはいいお肉だからやわらかいの。お肉も食べて!(Kore wa ii o-niku da kara yawarakai no. O-niku mo tabete!)
タロウ (Tarō) : さっきから、クミは、人の世話ばかりしているな。(Sakki kara, Kumi wa, hito no sewa bakari shite iru na.)
父 (chichi) : お母さんみたいだ...。なぁ、タロウ。(O-kā-san mitai da... Nā, Tarō.)
Naomi: もう一度、お願いします。今度は、ゆっくりお願いします。(Mō ichi-do, onegai shimasu. Kondo wa, yukkuri onegai shimasu.)
クミ (Kumi) : タロウ、さっきから、お肉ばかり食べている。ほら、野菜も食べて。(Tarō, sakki kara, o-niku bakari tabete iru. Hora, yasai mo tabete.)
父 (chichi) : ははは、タロウは野菜が嫌いで、肉しか食べないからな。(Hahaha, Tarō wa yasai ga kirai de, niku shika tabenai kara na.)

Naomi: 次は、英語が入ります。(Tsugi wa, Eigo ga hairimasu.)

クミ (Kumi) : タロウ、さっきから、お肉ばかり食べている。ほら、野菜も食べて。(Tarō, sakki kara, o-niku bakari tabete iru. Hora, yasai mo tabete.)
KUMI: Tarō, you've been eating only meat for a while now. Here, eat some veggies as well.
父 (chichi) : ははは、タロウは野菜が嫌いで、肉しか食べないからな。(Hahaha, Tarō wa yasai ga kirai de, niku shika tabenai kara na.)
DAD: Hahaha, Tarō didn’t like vegetables since he was little, and he only eats meat.
タロウ (Tarō) : 俺、野菜アレルギーがあるんだ。(Ore, yasai arerugī ga aru n da.)
TARO: I'm allergic to vegetables.
クミ (Kumi) : もー、嘘ばっかり。それから、どうして、お父さんは豆腐だけ食べているの。(Mō, uso bakkari. Sorekara, dōshite, o-tō-san wa tōfu dake tabete iru no.)
KUMI: Ugh, you're lying. And why is your dad only eating tofu?
父 (chichi) : あ...。(A…)
DAD: Erm...
タロウ (Tarō) : 父さんは歯が悪いんだ。だからやわらかいものしか食べないんだ。(O-tō-san wa ha ga warui n da. Dakara yawarakai mono shika tabenai n da.)
TARŌ: Dad's teeth are weak. That's why he only eats soft food.
クミ (Kumi) : これはいいお肉だからやわらかいの。お肉も食べて!(Kore wa ii o-niku da kara yawarakai no. O-niku mo tabete!)
KUMI: This is high-quality meat, so it's soft. Please eat some meat as well!
タロウ (Tarō) : さっきから、クミは、人の世話ばかりしているな。(Sakki kara, Kumi wa, hito no sewa bakari shite iru na.)
TARŌ: Kumi, you've been nagging at other people for a while now.
父 (chichi) : お母さんみたいだ...。なぁ、タロウ。(O-kā-san mitai da... Nā, Tarō.)
DAD: She's just like your mother...Tarō.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Okay, so this series is finally over. Naomi-sensei, what are they eating? 何を食べていますか。(Nani o tabete imasu ka.)
Naomi: すき焼き。(Sukiyaki.)
Peter: Which is
Naomi: One pot dish cooked at the table. ピーターさん、あの、ウィキペディア読んでください、はい。(Pītā-san, ano, Wikipedia yonde kudasai, hai.)
Peter: いやー、ウィキいらないですね。説明できますよ。(Iyā, Wiki iranai desu ne. Setsumei dekimasu yo.) すき焼き (sukiyaki) is a pot with soy sauce based broth and depending on how thick you want it, you can ingest it with water and inside of that, you cook meat, vegetables and the whole thing, kind of the thing itself Sukiyaki there is a raw egg that you dip the things into before eating it.
Naomi: よくできました。(Yoku dekimashita.)
Peter: ほら、一度も見なかったでしょ。(Hora, ichi-do mo minakatta desho.)
Naomi: あのすき焼きの「すき」は likable じゃないんですよね、ゆういちさん。(Ano sukiyaki no “suki” wa “likable” ja nai n desu yo ne, Yūichi-san.)
Yūichi: そうですね。harrowです。(Sō desu ne. “harrow” desu.)
Peter: Basically it’s a farming tool that’s used to plough the land and break up the weeds and everything that was in there and in the Edo era farm is used as a piece of equipment not only to do the farming but also to cook.
Naomi: ねぇ。(Nee.) Clever.
Peter: Poor.
Naomi: まあね。(Mā ne.) あの (ano) It’s like a famous Korean pod, ブテチゲ (butechige). They substitute military helmet for pot.
Peter: So women are fighting, next minute cooking.
Naomi: ちょっと臭そうね。ゆうちゃんはすき焼き好きですか。(Chotto kusasō ne. Yū-chan wa sukiyaki suki desu ka.)
Yūichi: はい、大好きです。(Hai, daisuki desu.)
Peter: Okay, that’s enough. Let’s move on to the vocab.
Naomi: ひどい。(Hidoi.)

Peter: Sukiyaki. A Japanese dish cooked in a pot using sliced beef, vegetables, slowly cooked in a mixture of soy sauce, sugar and mirin.
Naomi: What a nice definition.
Peter: Yeah, I am glad I thought of it.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Naomi-sensei, now before we jump into looking at some words used in today’s lesson, I want to take a look at this さっき (sakki), reason being is I always got this confused with さっき (sakki), meaning ahead of and they are so similar in pronunciation but the meanings are completely opposite that it took me a really long time to get the hang of this. さき (saki) which means ahead and さっき (sakki) which means just now. Can you give us the pronunciation for ahead as in 300 meters ahead?
Naomi: さき。300メートル先。(Saki. San-byaku-mētoru saki.)
Peter: Then we have just now.
Naomi: さっき (sakki)
Peter: Slight pause in there. So we just ate.
Naomi: さっき食べた。(Sakki tabeta.)
Peter: Just ate. Okay thanks. Okay, on to the other words.
Naomi: The first word is 歯 (ha).
Peter: Tooth, teeth.
Naomi: Please take a look at the kanji. The top part of kanji is 止める (tomeru) which means to stop right and there is a square – square is a mouth and inside a mouth.
Peter: Actually it’s not a square. It’s got an open top.
Naomi: But it’s combined to the bottom line of 止める (tomeru) and it looks almost like 口 (kuchi), right? Then inside the mouth, there is rice. So in the mouth, rice is stopped by the teeth.
Peter: Yeah so basically the rice stops in the mouth. That’s the last destination.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: I like that one. Nice.
Naomi: Do you? Really?
Peter: Yeah really, nice mnemonic.
Naomi: そう?(Sō?)
Peter: よくできました。(Yoku dekimashita.)
Naomi: ありがとうございます。医者は doctor. 歯医者だと?(Arigatō gozaimasu. Isha wa “doctor”. Haisha da to?)
Peter: Dentist.
Naomi: ですね。(Desu ne.)
Peter: Same word as 医者 (isha) just we have the kanji for tooth in front. なおみ先生がジョークを用意してきましたけれども、私はこのくだらない冗談に参加したくないですから、ゆうちゃんに譲ります。(Naomi-sensei ga jōku o yōi shite kimashita keredomo, watashi wa kono kudaranai jōdan ni sanka shitakunai desu kara, Yū-chan ni yuzurimasu.) So basically Naomi-sensei prepared a joke and I don’t want any part of it. So ゆうちやん (Yū-chan), ゆういち (Yūichi) is going to step up and take my part. お願いします。(Onegai shimasu.)
Yūichi: はい、じゃあなおみ先生、お願いします。(Hai, jā Naomi-sensei, onegai shimasu.)
Naomi: 歯医者が嫌いな島はどこですか。(Haisha ga kirai na shima wa doko desu ka.) 島 (shima) means Island ですね (desu ne).
Peter: Which island is hated by dentists the most?
Yūichi: うーん、難しいですね。なぞなぞってやつですか。(Ūn, muzukashii desu ne. Nazonazo tte yatsu desu ka.)
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) It’s a riddle. わかりませんか。(Wakarimasen ka.)
Peter: 教えてください。(Oshiete kudasai.)
Naomi: It’s Hawaii.
Peter: Hawaii. あ、歯はいい。(A, ha wa ii.) Like as in Hawaii but also your teeth are good.
Naomi: 歯はいい (ha wa ii), 歯はイー (ha wa ī), ハワイー (hawaī), ハワイ (Hawai)...
Yūichi: なるほど。(Naruhodo.)
Naomi: … 次、行きましょ。(...Tsugi, ikimasho.)
Peter: 素晴らしかったです。(Subarashikatta desu.) I think because it was so bad that they will remember that very well. Great trick, Naomi. Good mnemonic.
Naomi: Thank you. There is one word I want to take a look at, which is 俺 (ore).
Peter: Which is the first person pronoun used by male speakers.
Naomi: これはゆういちさん使いますか。(Kore wa Yūichi-san tsukaimasu ka.) Do you use 俺 (ore)?
Yūichi: はい、使います。友達と話す時に、使います。(Hai, tsukaimasu. Tomodachi to hanasu toki ni, tsukaimasu.)
Peter: So you use it when you talk to your friends?
Yūichi: Yes.
Peter: You wouldn’t use it when speaking to someone with a higher social status than you, right?
Yūichi: Ah. No, never. I can’t use that.
Naomi: あれ?さっき俺って使ってましたよね? (Are? Sakki ore tte tsukatte mashita yo ne?) You just use 俺 (ore) to Peter-san, right?
Yūichi: Oh really? I forgot.
Peter: Really?
Naomi: No, no, no just kidding.
Yūichi: Oh!
Peter: So basically you are pretty low right now on the social status.
Naomi: Because he is the youngest, 20?
Yūichi: Twenty one.
Naomi: Twenty one.
Peter: Basically a university student.
Yūichi: Yeah.
Peter: But if you speak with 先輩 (senpai), so what year you are? A 3rd year, junior?
Yūichi: I am a junior.
Peter: So do you use it when you speak with seniors?
Yūichi: Sometimes.
Peter: What about with your professor?
Yūichi: Never, I don’t use it.
Naomi: So what do you use then?
Yūichi: 僕 (boku)
Peter: So it’s kind of like a 私 (watashi) is the most polite. 僕 (boku) is kind of neutral, a little more masculine and 俺 (ore) is very masculine and not to be used in very formal situations.
Naomi: ピーターさんはちなみに?(Pītā-san wa chinami ni?)
Peter: 私、あるいは僕。俺は二回ぐらい使ったことがありますけれど、なんか…。(Watashi, arui wa boku. Ore wa ni-kai gurai tsukatta koto ga arimasu keredo, nanka…) I usually – I primarily use 僕 (boku) and 私 (watashi) but I tried 俺 (ore) twice but I just don’t feel comfortable saying it.
Naomi: あ~、そうね。(Ā, sō ne.) It’s a bit slangy expression. 私は使いません。(Watashi wa tsukaimasen.)
Peter: Do you use あたし (atashi)?
Naomi: ううん。あ~、わかんないなあ。(Ūn. Ā, wakannai nā.) I don’t, I don’t know.
Peter: A female way to refer to oneself is 私 (watashi) and
Naomi: うん、私。(Un, watashi.)
Peter: あたし (atashi)
Naomi: あたし (atashi)? わたし (watashi)?
Peter: I think it sounds cute, あたし (atashi).
Naomi: 使うかなあ、うん。(Tsukau ka nā, un.)
Yūichi: Yeah, girls use あたし (atashi).
Naomi: あたし (atashi) in a casual, very casual situation. Yes.
Yūichi: Yeah. Like when they send their emails, when they talk to their friends, they use あたし (atashi) instead of 私 (watashi).
Peter: I have this image of like あたし (atashi) like rising intonation like, me? I don’t know why I have that image.
Naomi: あ、そう。でも、わかるわかる。何でだかわかんないけど。(A, sō. Demo, wakaru wakaru. Nande da ka wakannai kedo.)
Peter: なおみ先生、ちょっとあの例を聞かせて頂けますか。(Naomi-sensei, chotto ano rei o kikasete itadakemasu ka.) Let me hear an example using あたし (atashi)?
Naomi: あたし?あたしが?(Atashi? Atashi ga?)
Peter: Yeah.
Naomi: みたいな感じでしょ?(Mitai na kanji desho?)
Peter: どうぞ。(Dōzo.)
Naomi: あたし?(Atashi?)
Peter: You can do it, like a little cuter than that.
Naomi: うるさいなあ。(Urusai nā.) Let’s move on.
Peter: Okay.
Naomi: 次は、アレルギー。(Tsugi wa, arerugī.)
Peter: Allergy.
Naomi: In today’s dialogue, we have
Yūichi: 野菜アレルギーがあるんだ。(Yasai arerugī ga aru n da.)
Peter: I have an allergy to vegetables. I am allergic to vegetables.
Naomi: あるんだ (aru n da) is a casual form. So あります (arimasu) or あるんです (aru n desu) are used in a polite situation like 野菜アレルギーがあります (yasai arerugī ga arimasu) or 野菜アレルギーがあるんです (yasai arerugī ga aru n desu).
Peter: So, a great phrase to remember. If you are allergic to something and you are coming to Japan.
Naomi: ゆうちゃんは何かアレルギーはありますか。(Yū-chan wa nani ka arerugī wa arimasu ka.)
Yūichi: 埃アレルギーがあります。(Hokori arerugī ga arimasu.)
Peter: I am allergic to dust.
Naomi: なるほどね。私の母は猫アレルギーがあります。(Naruhodo ne. Watashi no haha wa neko arerugī ga arimasu.)
Peter: So your mother is allergic to cats.
Naomi: ピーターさんは?アレルギーありますか。(Pītā-san wa? Arerugī arimasu ka.)
Peter: 私はある先生にアレルギーがありますね。名前を、ちょっと言いづらいですけれども、なんか、見るとくしゃみが出ます。(Watashi wa aru sensei ni arerugī ga arimasu ne. Namae o, chotto iizurai desu keredomo, nanka, miru to kushami ga demasu.)
Naomi: So while you are staring at me… 次に行きましょう!(Tsugi ni ikimashō!)
