INTRODUCTION |
Sakura: おはよう、デンバー。さくらです。(Ohayō, Denbā. Sakura desu.) |
Yoshi: おはよう、デンバー。ヨシです。(Ohayō, Denbā. Yoshi desu.) |
Peter: Peter here. Beginner lesson #90. Back in the studio for the first time in a long time for beginner lessons. |
Sakura: Beginner lesson. |
Peter: Is the one, the only Yoshi-san, Yoshi…. |
Sakura: Yeay… |
Yoshi: No, no, no, no Sakura-san. |
Sakura: さくらです。(Sakura desu.) |
Peter: Yoshi, it’s been a while, what can we say to her? |
Yoshi: お久しぶりです。お元気ですか。(O-hisashiburi desu. O-genki desu ka.) |
Sakura: 元気です。(Genki desu.) |
Peter: It is so great to have you here with us Sakura-san, are you excited? |
Sakura: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: Come on, yes there it is. |
Sakura: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: The laugh that everyone has been missing. Well it is great to have you back. Now let’s have Yoshi-san tell you about today’s lesson. Yoshi-san, what’s going on with today’s lesson? |
Yoshi: 今日の会話は、テレマーケティングの会話です。(Kyō no kaiwa wa, teremāketingu no kaiwa desu.) |
Peter: Yes, telemarketers are dreaded in every country ah..if you are a listener and you are a telemarketer, we didn’t mean that. So what we are going to do today is today, I got to admit, it’s a bit wild. We are talking four phone calls, four voice actors. I am trying to count the voices, about six different voices plus a three-way phone call to top it all off. Now the three-way phone call is actually the telemarketer calling grandpa, grandpa talking to the telemarketer and in the middle, grandma picks up a different phone. It is going to get pretty hectic. Here we go. |

POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Peter: So Natsuko-san, what do you think of the conversation? |
Natsuko: Poor Chigusa. I think she should quit this job, yes. |
Peter: Let’s ask Take-San what he thinks. |
Natsuko: タケさんは、今日の会話はどう思いましたか。(Take-san wa, kyō no kaiwa wa dō omoimashita ka.) |
Peter: Speechless. |
Take: 男はいつになってもナンパするんですね。(Otoko wa itsu ni natte mo nanpa suru n desu ne.) |
Natsuko: そうなんですか。(Sō nan desu ka.) |
Peter: All right, let’s change this topic. So Yoshi san, let’s ask Sakura-san what she thinks of today’s conversation. |
Yoshi: さくらさん、今日の会話はどうでしたか。(Sakura-san, kyō no kaiwa wa dō deshita ka.) |
Sakura: 面白いです。(Omoshiroi desu.) |
Peter: And remember, in this case, we say どこがいいですか (doko ga ii desu ka). |
Sakura: Hah! |
Peter: And for the proper pronunciation |
Take: どこがいいですか。(Doko ga ii desu ka.) |
Sakura: おじいさんが面白いです。(O-jii-san ga omoshiroi desu.) |
Peter: Ah grandpa, the one and only. |
Sakura: He is funny. |
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Peter: All right. Lots of vocab. First word, お願いします、ヨシさん。(Onegai shimasu, Yoshi-san.) |
Yoshi: 最初のキーワードは、迷惑 (Saisho no kīwādo wa, meiwaku) |
Peter: Nuisance. |
Yoshi: (slow)めいわく (meiwaku) (natural speed) 迷惑 (meiwaku) |
Peter: Sakura-san, can you give us some instances in which this word is used? |
Sakura: 迷惑メール (meiwaku mēru) |
Peter: Spam. Nuisance mail, how would we say I get a lot of spam? |
Sakura: たくさん、迷惑メールが来ます。(Takusan, meiwaku mēru ga kimasu.) |
Peter: Another example. ヨシさん、お願いします。(Yoshi-san, onegai shimasu.) |
Yoshi: ありがた迷惑 (arigata meiwaku) |
Peter: Unwanted favor, mistaken kindness. |
Sakura: 可哀想。(Kawaisō.) |
Peter: What is this? |
Yoshi: So people are doing things for you thinking it’s good for you but it’s not really – it might be a little too much for you. |
Peter: And the first part comes from? |
Yoshi: ありがとう (arigatō) |
Peter: Hence thank you, nuisance. Next. |
Sakura: 近所迷惑 (kinjo meiwaku) |
Peter: Neighborhood. |
Sakura: Neighborhood. |
Peter: Nuisance. The first part is |
Sakura: 近所 (kinjo) |
Peter: Neighborhood. |
Sakura: Neighborhood. |
Peter: And the second part. |
Sakura: 迷惑 (meiwaku) |
Peter: Nuisance. Next we have |
Sakura: 次のキーワードは、間に合う (Tsugi no kīwādo wa, ma ni au) |
Peter: Sufficient, get by with. |
Sakura: (slow)まにあう (ma ni au) (natural speed) 間に合う (ma ni au) |
Peter: Now Sakura-san, can you tell us a bit about this? In the dialogue, we used this to refuse something saying |
Sakura: 間に合っています。(Ma ni atte imasu.) |
Peter: I have enough. Now can we just use this over the phone? What kind of situations can we use this in? |
Sakura: When somebody is soliciting yes and then you say that you already have it. So I don’t need it. |
Peter: Okay, so over the phone or in person… |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: You could use this. Excellent and we also had another way to refuse which was |
Sakura: 結構です。(Kekkō desu.) |
Peter: No thanks, I am fine. You can use this in more kinds of general cases. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: So in response to the question, do you want more to eat to say no thanks, you can answer |
Sakura: 結構です。(Kekkō desu.) |
Peter: You wouldn’t use |
Sakura: 間に合っています。(Ma ni atte imasu.) No! |
Peter: So there is a difference between these two. Next we had |
Yoshi: 次のキーワードは、保険 (Tsugi no kīwādo wa, hoken) |
Peter: Insurance. |
Yoshi: (slow)ほけん (hoken) (natural speed) 保険 (hoken) |
Peter: Now there are lots of different types of insurance. How about life insurance? |
Yoshi: 生命保険 (seimei hoken) |
Peter: Okay, the word for life comes in front, same as in English, life insurance, the word for life being |
Yoshi: 生命保険 (seimei hoken) |
Peter: How about car insurance? |
Sakura: 自動車保険 (jidōsha hoken) |
Peter: Again the word for car coming in the front. Health insurance |
Yoshi: 健康保険 (kenkō hoken) |
Peter: Next we have |
Sakura: 次のキーワードは、会社 (Tsugi no kīwādo wa, kaisha) |
Peter: Company and also used as office as in |
Sakura: 後で会社に戻ります。(Ato de kaisha ni modorimasu.) |
Peter: Afterwards, I will go back to the office. Next. |
Yoshi: について (ni tsuite) |
Peter: About. Please listen to the next example sentence. |
Yoshi: 本日の会議では、環境問題について、話し合います。(Honjitsu no kaigi de wa, kankyō mondai ni tsuite, hanashiaimasu.) |
Sakura: もう一度お願いします。ゆっくり、お願いします。(Mō ichi-do onegai shimasu. Yukkuri, onegai shimasu.) |
Yoshi: 本日の会議では、(Honjitsu no kaigi de wa,) |
Peter: At today’s conference. |
Yoshi: 環境問題について、話し合います。(Kankyō mondai ni tsuite, hanashiaimasu.) |
Peter: We will talk about environmental problems. Now what’s the word for environmental problems? |
Yoshi: 環境問題 (kankyō mondai) |
Peter: And in order to get about, we attach |
Yoshi: について (ni tsuite) |
Peter: Hence we are talking about this thing. Next. |
Sakura: 鶯嬢 (uguisujō) |
Peter: Sakura-san, what a look again! This is Japanese Bush Warbler and you may remember from Japanese cultural class #17, we discussed this bird. It has a very beautiful chirp. |
Sakura: (slow)うぐいすじょう (uguisujō) (natural speed) 鶯嬢 (uguisujō) |
Peter: Now for this word only, we have a special guest. That special guest, ヨシさん、お願いします。(Yoshi-san, onegai shimasu.) |
Yoshi: 夏子さんです!(Natsuko-san desu!) |
Peter: よろしくお願いします。(Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.) |
Natsuko: よろしくお願いします。(Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.) |
Peter: I mean we are getting down to a special guest for one word. |
Natsuko: なんでかなぁ?変だなぁ!(Nande ka nā? Hen da nā!) |
Peter: I don’t know. We just have to talk with the scheduling manager. |
Natsuko: Yes, please. |
Peter: Wow! What a tone. She...very... Next word. |
Natsuko: 次のキーワードは、ナンパ (Tsugi no kīwādo wa, nanpa) |
Peter: And how do we make this into a verb? |
Natsuko: ナンパする (nanpa suru) |
Peter: Pick up, make a pass, hit on. |
Natsuko: (slow)ナンパ (nanpa) (natural speed) ナンパ (nanpa) |
Peter: Now let’s have Yoshi-san tell us all about this word. ヨシさん、お願いします。(Yoshi-san, onegai shimasu.) |
Yoshi: I don’t know where to start. Just kidding. |
Peter: Natsuko, let’s ask Yoshi-san to give us an example. |
Natsuko: ヨシさん、例文をお願いします。(Yoshi-san, reibun o onegai shimasu.) |
Yoshi: ピーターさん、表参道に女子大生をナンパしに行きましょう。(Pītā-san, Omotesandō ni joshidaisei o nanpa shi ni ikimashō.) |
Peter: いいえ、丁重にお断りします。私は結婚しています。…後で行きましょう。(Iie, teichō ni o-kotowari shimasu. Watashi wa kekkon shite imasu…. Ato de ikimashō.) I wonder if they are in the last part. So Yoshi-san, what’s your best line? Come on, give us the best line. Don’t be shy, come on. This is what everyone wants to know. |
Yoshi: 私の職業は医者です。(Watashi no shokugyō wa isha desu.) |
Peter: The doctor works in any language. |
Natsuko: Yes. |
Peter: Now Natsuko-san, for those of you who haven’t seen Natsuko-san, she is a very attractive lady. So give us the worst line you’ve ever heard. |
Natsuko: Worst! |
Peter: You got like people yell at you on the street or like what’s – come on, construction site. I have seen some shady looking construction sites. |
Natsuko: Ey… |
Peter: Or how about your best line? What was the best one? |
Natsuko: I don’t know any lines. |
Peter: You never heard any? |
Natsuko: Never. |
Peter: Wow! I can’t believe that. |
Natsuko: That’s my best line so far. |
Peter: So far. All right, now for those of you who are out there, we’d like to open up today’s message board to hear about your best line. So…Let’s hear some good lines on the message board. It maybe – just maybe umm I will even throw one up there too. We will see what happens and thank you very much, Natsuko-san. |
Natsuko: どうもありがとうございました。(Dōmo arigatō gozaimashita.) |
Peter: The exit is this way. |
Natsuko: じゃあ、またね。(Jā, mata ne.) |
Yoshi: 次のキーワードは、まったくもう (Tsugi no kīwādo wa, mattaku mō) |
Peter: Completely, unbelievable. This is an expression used when you are annoyed, irritated or amazed at one’s foolishness. Now I’ve never heard this expression. |
Sakura: Hah? |
Peter: Break it down. |
Sakura: (slow)まったくもう (mattaku mō) (natural speed) まったくもう (mattaku mō) まったくもう。(Mattaku mō.) |
Peter: I like it. |
Sakura: I always want to say it. |
Peter: Towards who? |
Sakura: To Peter…まったくもう。(Mattaku mō.) |
Peter: It’s my favorite Japanese expression. I would love it if you said it. Please. お願いします。(Onegai shimasu.) |
Sakura: 今?(Ima?) |
Peter: Yes. |
Sakura: まったくもう!(Mattaku mō!) |
Peter: Not bad, but let’s get a real one out of you. Sakura, you look lovely today. |
Sakura: まったくもう。(Mattaku mō.) |
Peter: There it is folks. Sakura can’t take a compliment. |
Sakura: Hmm. |
Peter: And last we have? |
Sakura: 自分 (jibun) |
Peter: Self. |
Sakura: (slow)じぶん (jibun) (natural speed) 自分 (jibun) |
Peter: Can we have an example sentence? |
Sakura: 自分で考えたいので、一人にしてください。(Jibun de kangaetai node, hitori ni shite kudasai.) |
Peter: As I want to think by myself, please leave me alone. Ho ho! We got to get a little more cheerful on these things. |
Sakura: ねぇ。(Nee.) |
Peter: I love to talk with the writers but we got the point across. |
Lesson focus
|
Peter: Okay, now on to today’s grammar point. Yoshi-san, when speaking to yourself as you do so often in Japanese. |
Yoshi: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: You use which form? |
Yoshi: Plain form. |
Peter: Yes, today’s grammar point is when you address yourself, you use the plain form. In the dialogue, when Chigusa says, I hate this work, she uses the plain form. She doesn’t attach |
Yoshi: です (desu) |
Peter: As she is speaking with herself. Now here is the key point. You wouldn’t walk around talking to yourself in the polite form. Well, maybe some people do but the more natural way is to use the plain form. For example, Yoshi-san, if you were talking to yourself deciding what to do today, what would you say? |
Yoshi: 今日、何しようかな。(Kyō, nani shiyō ka na.) |
Peter: Yes, and this is the plain form of |
Yoshi: 今日、何をしましょう。(Kyō, nani o shimashō.) |
Peter: Can we get a video of you walking around talking to yourself in the polite form? |
Yoshi: Ah it’s going to be expensive. |
Peter: We will put you on, like the station platform. |
Yoshi: Okay. |
Peter: Yeah, so just remember when you are talking to yourself, it is the plain form. |
Outro
|
Peter: All right, so that’s going to do for today. A long dialogue but you know, this dialogue is designed to cover everything we’ve been working at up until this point. So please listen through this dialogue a few times. Let things sink in. Again lots of topics, lots of grammar, lots of things we’ve covered up until this point. All right, that’s going to do for today. |
Sakura: また明日ね。(Mata ashita ne.) |
Yoshi: またね。(Mata ne.) |
