VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Okay, excellent job. Just speechless, speechless. It was that good. Okay, okay we have one new word in there and that word is
Sakura: 写真 (shashin)
Peter: Very nice. And it means
Sakura: Photograph.
Peter: Yes okay, one more time, please.
Sakura: 写真 (shashin)
Peter: Break it down.
Peter: And one time fast
Sakura: 写真 (shashin)
Peter: Okay, very nice. Now as we said, most of the stuff in here has been covered already, right?
Natsuko: Yeah, I think so.
Peter: So there was one thing that I noticed. In the dialogue, when Sakura, the first question that Sakura asked was
(Kore wa nan desu ka.)
Peter: Your first response was
Natsuko: これ?(Kore?)
Peter: Yeah. Can you tell us why you said this?
Natsuko: I kind of confirmed what she was talking about.
Peter: Perfect, yes. Notice the intonation, give it to us one more time.
Natsuko: これ?(Kore?)
Peter: So you see the latter part gets chopped off and we go just with the intonation, one more time.
Natsuko: これ?(Kore?)
Peter: Okay, very nice. Now the conversation was phenomenal but there were a few points that again we twisted and shifted to fit our model. Now when asking about someone’s parents, when talking about your parents or someone else’s parents, would you use the word he or she.
Natsuko: Rarely.
Peter: Rarely, right?
Sakura: Umm…
Peter: So up until this point, we explained about talking about your own family inside your own family. Okay, but in this case, Sakura may have wanted to ask Natsuko about her father. So if you ask about someone else’s family, do you use 父 (chichi) or 母 (haha) or the words we used?
Sakura: No.
Peter: No.
Sakura: We use politer form.
Peter: Okay, so what we would like to do is we would like to stop here and introduce you to the politer form. Okay, so it’s so great to have both Natsuko and Sakura here. What we will do is I will give the word. Natsuko will be speaking about your own family and then Sakura will be speaking about someone else’s family and I think that should work out very nice so you see the difference. In the example you gave us, it was
Natsuko: 私の父 (watashi no chichi)
Peter: Yes, my father. Okay, now let’s get talking about someone else’s family.
Peter: Yes, very nice. One more time, please.
Peter: Okay, father and talking about someone else’s family, please break this down for us.
Peter: And one time fast.
Peter: Yeah, notice how that we have the long vowel in there. Okay, so back to the conversation. So Sakura and Natsuko are looking at a picture of Natsuko’s family and since Natsuko said that it’s her family, the older gentleman, well it’s a good chance that it’s her father. So if Sakura wanted to ask, is this your father, she would point and say
(Anata no o-tō-san desu ka.)
Peter: Is this your father? Yes, one more time.
(Anata no o-tō-san desu ka.)
Peter: Yes, very nice. Why don’t we have Sakura ask Natsuko, is this her father and then have Natsuko reply. So you can see – pay attention to the word usage here. Here we go.
(Anata no o-tō-san desu ka.)
Peter: Is this your father?
(Hai, watashi no chichi desu.)
Peter: Yes, this is my father. Perfect, perfect, perfect. You see the difference between talking about someone else’s family and your own family. Okay, so let’s go through some more family members and again, Natsuko will be giving a speech about your own family and Sakura will be giving a speech about someone else’s family. Okay, here we go. Mother, talking about your own family.
VOCAB LIST
Natsuko: 母 (haha)
Peter: Mother. Talking about someone else’s family.
Peter: Very nice. One more time, Sakura.
Peter: Okay, and please break this down.
Peter: And one time fast.
Peter: Yes, mother. Next, my older brother. Talking about your own family.
Natsuko: 兄 (ani)
Peter: Older brother. Talking about someone else’s family.
Peter: One more time, Sakura.
Peter: Break it down.
Peter: One time fast.
Peter: Very nice. Older sister, talking about your own family.
Natsuko: 姉 (ane)
Peter: Older sister. Talking about someone else’s family.
Peter: One time fast.
Peter: Okay. Younger brother. Talking about your own family.
Natsuko: 弟 (otōto)
Peter: Younger brother. Talking about someone else’s family.
Sakura: 弟さん (otōto-san)
Peter: One more time.
Sakura: 弟さん (otōto-san)
Peter: Break it down.
Peter: One time fast.
Sakura: 弟さん (otōto-san)
Peter: Very nice. Next, younger sister. Talking about your own family.
Natsuko: 妹 (imōto)
Peter: Younger sister. Talking about someone else’s family.
Sakura: 妹さん (imōto-san)
Peter: One more time.
Sakura: 妹さん (imōto-san)
Peter: Break it down.
Peter: One time fast.
Sakura: 妹さん (imōto-san)
Peter: Excellent. Now we are going to have Sakura ask one more time and Natsuko will answer. So please pay attention to the difference between Sakura who is speaking about Natsuko’s family and Natsuko who is speaking about her own family. Remember, Sakura, other people’s, Natsuko, her own, okay. Here we go.
(Anata no o-tō-san desu ka.)
Peter: Is this your father?
(Hai, watashi no chichi desu.)
Peter: Yes, this is my father.
(Anata no o-kā-san desu ka.)
Peter: Is this your mother?
(Hai, watashi no haha desu.)
Peter: Yes, this is my mother.
(Anata no o-nii-san desu ka.)
Peter: Is this your older brother?
(Hai, watashi no ani desu.)
Peter: Yes, this is my older brother.
(Anata no o-nee-san desu ka.)
Peter: Is this your older sister?
(Hai, watashi no ane desu.)
Peter: Yes, this is my older sister.
(Anata no otōto-san desu ka.)
Peter: Is this your younger brother?
(Hai, watashi no otōto desu.)
Peter: Yes, this is my younger brother.
(Anata no imōto-san desu ka.)
Peter: Is this your younger sister?
(Hai, watashi no imōto desu.)
Peter: Yes, this is my younger sister. Excellent, excellent, excellent. This is so important because knowing which words to use when speaking about your own family and other people’s families is quite tricky but thanks to Natsuko and Sakura, we turned this into
Sakura: 朝飯前 (asameshimae)
Peter: Piece of cake.
Natsuko: Yes.

Outro

Peter: I'll tell you. This lesson 勉強になりました (benkyō ni narimashita), I learned a lot because this is one confusing topic but not anymore. Thanks to Natsuko and Sakura. Okay, so we are going to stop here. So we will say.
(Mata ashita ne.)
(Mata ashita.)
Peter: See you tomorrow.
