de areba and nara

Postby xmoonsirenx » March 6th, 2010 10:26 pm

Okay, so I was going through the grammar bank and I looked up the -ba conditional, and it says that for na adjectives and nouns you use -de areba.
Such as "shinsetsu de areba" and gakusei de areba" .
Okay I got that, but then when I looked up the lesson notes for Lower intermediate lesson S5. It says that the ba condtional of -na adjectives and nouns is "nara"
such as " shizuka nara" "natsu nara"

I read somewhere that although it says to use "de areba" for na adjectives and nouns, in actually "nara" is more commonly used instead. Is this true?

Which one is correct or more commonly used for na adjectives and nouns?

Thank you for reading! :)

Conditional ば "if"
Add らばtoなadjectives
EGしずかならば

Conditionalら "if" and "when"
Plain past + ら
EGしずかだったら

These are the two forms i use. I've never heard of the de areba.

ば, たら, and なら are separate constructions. If you search the forum, I remember there was a thread explaining the differences that included と as well. Those four are probably the trickiest of the elementary grammar to learn, since there are cases where they overlap, and others where only one or two of them are acceptable.
