Order of Podcasts from Scratch (Asked to Death, I Know)

Postby Imparatus » May 17th, 2009 9:30 pm

Hi,

I've been working thru the podcasts as best I can, but I wondered if anyone who has some significant experience could help my daughter and me in terms of the actual order in which seasons and series should be accomplished. I've read a lot of questions and responses, but I don't seem to be getting the information I need. Here's my dilemma: There are 3 newbie series, newbie, newbie s2 and s4, and beginner series which have a similar demarcation. I often hear that one good place to start is with Nihongo Dojo, but these lessons seem to start in the middle of one of the Newbie series. I'm sure that the problem is that several of the series may have been renamed/numbered, or otherwise updated, but I'd really just like something that says:

Start with Newbie Series S2 or 4, lessons x-x, then progress to x. I guess I am a bit dense when it comes to figuring this stuff out. However, it's still a lot of fun. So, if any of you would like to give us a VERY basic and relatively detailed path to follow, we'd be very grateful. We love the site, the podcasts and all of the wonderful advice we get here!

Thanks!

Mark

I say just pick one and go with it. Say take newbie season 1 and start with that. At the beginner level its not raelly going to hurt you because you do newbie season two before you start newbie season 2 or whatever. When I started there really wasnt much of a newbie series and I was fine starting right off with beginner. So either way you slice the pizza it is still pizza. Dig in

Yes, we usually recommend starting with Nihongo Dojo if you are a true beginner. Even though it's in the middle of the Newbie series, the content covered starts from the very beginning. You can complement it with Beginner Season 1 also if you like (before there were Newbie lessons, the Beginner lessons were for true beginners).

I hope that helps :)

For that reason, the original Beginner series is a good place to start, I think. It's very simple at first, but it's also got an infectious rough-around-the-edges feel that really motivated me when I discovered them. The problem is that it ramps up in difficulty quite suddenly, but when that happens you could try some of the lessons from other series to find whichever one feels good for you.

I truly appreciate the help, and all the good will from the folks here at JP101.com. Got lots of iPhone apps, working thru the podcasts and am also working with Anki. I can't wait to get deeper into the language, and am having a great deal of fun learning kana and starting kanji.

Thanks again to all (and I'll be adding Japanese to my posts soon!)
