Is における potential?

I'm using a ２級 review book, and in the において/における section, this is the only example for おける：

それは私の人生における最良の日であった。

Would the translation be something like "That was possibly the best day in my life" ? More literally, "That was the best day that could be placed into my life"... Or, is the おける something else entirely, and not the potential?

If memory serves における・において is more or less a (written) formal way of saying で or に.
