Japanese font in iTunes and iPod

Postby Tourne » February 21st, 2009 3:38 pm

If I look at the lesson transcript for early intermediate lessons either in iTunes or on my iPod touch, I see gibberish instead of the japanese text. For example I see this in iTunes.

≠Å≠ñ≠í≠ª≠È≠é
≠æ≠€≠±™F≠Í≠¢™A≠æ≠€≠±≠Å≠·™B
≠“≠Æ≠±™F≠“≠Æ≠±≠Å≠·≠¯≠Ç™B
≠æ≠€≠±™F≠œ™A≠“≠Æ≠±™A≠≤≠¢≠¶≠å≠€≠Ô™H≠Ç≠€≠µ≠Ä≠Å≠ñ≠í≠–≠ê≠È≠©≠Á≠∏≠Ì™H

On the iPod, I see the same but without all the ≠ signs.

For later lessons the text is fine on both devices. It seems to be OK from about Intermediate Lesson 51 onwards, although I only sampled a few files. Was this a general problem with the lesson transcripts at the time, or am I missing something?

My guess is that they might have been using some other encoding at first, other than UTF8, or maybe a non-standard font. I noticed interesting issues with some early PDF files as well, but like you said, things smooth out later.

Yes, it really looks like an encoding problem. But you can open them with Adobe Reader without problems?

Yes opening the PDFS is fine for all lessons. This is only an issue with the "lyrics" attached to the audio.

hi! I just bought an iPod touch yesterday and I started reconfiguring My Feed.

I've been having the same problem with my audio lyrics.
Although downloading the long list of audios was easy,
I had to check EACH audio if the kana was displayed correctly.
That was quite a waste of time (sigh).

Has anyone fixed this yet?

Some observations:
It displays garbage lyrics on my iPod, even if I switch iPod language to Japanese.
The kana text appears correctly in iTunes.

So I tried this workaround, but not sure if it works 100%.

Before syncing to my iPod, I change my iPod language to Japanese.
Sync.
Then check each lesson's lyrics one by one. (sigh)

Same here. Any solutions?

Cheers,
