(I found 'osowareru' difficult. Isn't this the same as the potential form of 'osowaru', which is 'to receive instruction'? So what is the difference between 'to be assaulted' and 'to be able to receive instruction'?)

襲う is the dictionary form of the word for 'to attack.' The passive form is 襲われる, which means to be attacked. So, the past tense of that becomes 襲われました。
