A serious problem.

Postby Tristamus » August 26th, 2009 4:17 am

Hello guys,

My name is Tristamus, and I received an email from Peter Galante (japanesepod101.com owner, or something like that) concerning signing up at JapanesePod101.com for a "Pick your
Price" option.

I chose to do this, and selected "$1" as my price during sign up.

I then was brought to a page that asked me for an email and password,
and entered my login info as I always have in the past with my free
account that I had previously.

It then wouldn't let me use my account, and was asking for a new one.
So I went to the top of the page and logged in there. Then, I went to
"My Account" and checked my subscription, and it says I have nothing
but the free lifetime account.

So then, I checked my email, and it says I JUST PAID 240 DOLLARS ($240)
FOR A 24 MONTH SUBSCRIPTION. This is NOT TRUE. It is only supposed
to be a 1$ fee, for 1 month, then it should revert to a standard
premium fee.

I can not pay 240 dollars up front for a two year subscription at the
moment, and would like to speak with someone about this error AS SOON
AS POSSIBLE.

It was confusing when I got to the subscription choice page, because there were about 5 different options, and none of them said "1$." So, it made me scared, and I must of accidentaly proceeded.

The funny thing is, the website doesnt even think I've paid a single PENNY! I am still only a FREE account member, have no payment history under "My account", and get nothing special.

YET, I check my bank account online, and they TOOK 240 DOLLARS out of my checking account!

I need to know what to do to get this straight, cause I am going to Japan in less than 30 days and I need that 240 dollars for other things!!

Thanks, for whoever can help me with this one....

Well, thank god you say that Jessi, because I actually did that before I even posted here.

I emailed them, and hope to get that refund as soon as possible.

Also, I would still like to take advantage of that special "You pick the Price" offer!

How exactly should I go about doing that? Just leave the default option (on 25$ per month)?

Tristamus,
The person who gets back to you (it will probably will be a guy named Rob) will be able to let you know how to go about doing that. :) I'm sorry to say I don't have the answer for you.

I'm not going to make any accusations as to the validity of what you received, but as someone who has read quite a bit about online security, I feel obligated to mention that you should never supply passwords or personal information for a solicitation via email. It's dangerous and an extremely common way people get their accounts hijacked.

With that said, have fun in Japan. :D

Yes Psy, I completely agree.

It wasnt via email, though, it was on the website itself, japanesepod101.com.

They asked for it after a certain point in the subscription process, and it was very confusing as to why...

I definitive agree! I also was a victim of hijack. It was last year in the JP101 forum so you really should be careful here is the thread where everything happen
