Depends on your OS. In Vista you shouldn't have this problem, but if you have Windows XP you have to install Japanese language support. I don't know about MacOS and others.

I'm having the same problem on Mac OsX but only with the full set of Kanji lesson notes - NOT the 'lite' set.

They are fine on my vista machine but it seems different japanese fonts are used for the lite version vs the full version of the lesson note and on my mac on the lite version works but the full version doesn't - square boxes instead of letters - weirdly this occurs for the romanji also (but not the regular english text).

Can you give us some info on the names of the font sets used as maybe this would help.

EDIT: I am using the latest version of adobe acrobat reader (9) NOT preview.

I wish I could provide you with more detail, but I do recall quite clearly that Acrobat requires a separate asian font pack to display the characters. I'm pretty sure you can find an install option in the application preferences, but if that doesn't work, give google a shot and I'm sure something will come up.

Thank you for putting me on the right track - I downloaded the mac version of the japanese fontpack for Adobe 9 and installed it. It is working fine now.
