Can ipod nano users see the lesson transcript? YES!

Postby ianjappod » March 23rd, 2009 10:50 am

while they are listening to the lesson. I used to be able to but something has changed. The lesson transcript is still in the 'lyrics' field but I can't seem to see that on my ipod nano, only the 'description' field which has very little info.

I can see the lyrics field on non-podcast files without any problem.

I'm really mystified and would like to know if it's only me that is having this problem. If it's only me then I've messed something up somewhere, I guess.

Fellow ipod nano users, please tell me if you can access the transcript from your ipod nano or not.

Thanks! :)

Can no ipod nano user give me an answer? I would very much appreciate any replies. :)

Thanks

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your problems. Can you let us know what's in the "Description"? You're pressing the center button twice during playback, and... what's coming up?

I'm sorry I can't help, but for the record the lesson transcript comes up for the latest lesson without any problems on my iPod touch.

Thanks for those answers, it will help the tech team to work out what's going on.

For example, Upper Intermediate Lesson S3 #5 - Sniff Out the Best Japanese Phrases! If I press the centre button of my ipod nano I see (sorry this is long):

Upper Intermediate Lesson S3 #5 - Sniff Out the Best Japanese Phrases! 13:37 09/03/05 Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Many languages have phrases that use the word "nose." Think of how often you say, "You have a good nose for business" or "I'm trying to sniff out a good deal." I'll bet you also use phrases that incorporate "pride," such as, "I am proud of my new job." Learning to use these two concepts in Japanese will take your Japanese to the next level.
This upper intermediate Japanese lesson presents the Japanese hana for "nose" and "pride." You'll also learn to talk about "taking someone down a level" and "getting sick of something." This awesome Japanese lesson is packed with example sentences using all of these words and concepts. Don't miss this Japanese lesson; it's full of phrases you'll want to use right away!

I see the above text but no transcript which is weird because if I look at the podcast in iTunes, the transcript is there in the lyrics tab. For other mp3 files the lyrics tab displays fine on my ipod.

Even weirder is that the transcripts for Englishpod101 appear fine on my ipod. I wonder if they are made in different ways by different production teams.

I hope this information helps. If you need any further information I'll be happy to help.

Partly solved!

Well I have some more information on this. According to a page I was reading yesterday, mp3s set as podcasts do not show the lyrics field on the iPod. This is my experience but may be specific to my hardware.

If I listen to japanesepod101 downloaded via my iTunes feed the mp3 set as a podcast and I can't see the lesson transcript on my iPod Nano.

If I download the audio directly from the japanesepod101 site the mp3 is set as music and I can see the lesson transcript on my Nano.

A comment from someone at japanesepod101 would be appreciated. I find the ability to read the transcript while listening invaluable.

At the moment the only solution I can think of is manually downloading every audio file. I think there must be a better way.

I hope this helps others with the same problem.

Maybe you could use another podcast feeder to fetch the lessons, then import the files into your I-tunes library as mp3's ??

I use Juice. It is old now, and is not being updated any more, but it gets the job done.
There are a few minor problems with it - but it still works better than many of the others I have tried.

You will need to shorten the file name, as Juice does not remove the code at the end file name that links the podcast to the server.

At the moment I've settled on Vienna. The GUI could be better but it gets the job done.
