Sesshomaru_Sama san, konnichiwa!
I am a karate guy, but at one point in my life I had serious plans to do what you're planning to do (health issues interceded, unfortunately).
I asked my Nihonjin friend about kenjutsu, who inquired of a local Sensei. Kendo (more of a sport) is much more widely practiced than kenjutsu (a dedicated martial art). It is very infrequent that a new student of kenjutsu is not already an accomplished kendoka. Usually they have trained many years with a kendo sensei before inquiring about actual kenjutsu practice.
Kendo does have its attractions, I think, due to its wider popularity. It's practiced all over the world, though of course not nearly as much as empty-hand arts such as karate-do. Finding a kenjutsu dojo is much more difficult, even in Japan. But maybe you can start out in kendo, then proceed to kenjutsu, as most do.
Hope this helps.
