How long should I wait to book home rentals?

Postby bloritsch » December 1st, 2013 8:17 pm

I've bought my plane tickets for my family to come to Japan in fall of next year. I've been searching for house rentals for my stay in Tokyo and Osaka, and have been looking at both https://www.airbnb.com/ and https://www.roomorama.com/. I've noticed that sometimes the owners of a property sometimes take a listing down and it seems a bit more volatile than buying the plane tickets.

We are pretty excited, and want to make the most of our stay. Things we are looking at are:
  • Location--near a JR line, and near local restaurants
  • Room--we are not small people, and our daughter needs a separate room
  • Laundry--we need to keep luggage at a minimum so we'll need to wash clothes

We have many options in Tokyo, but Osaka is a bit more challenging. The number of home rentals is much smaller, and are either too small or too expensive.

This is the first time I've vacationed like this, but I think the home rentals would be a much better way to experience Japan than staying in a hotel.

bloritsch-san,
kon'nichiwa!

I'm personally not sure about house rental things other than the fact there are some
guest houses... :( How long do you stay? Have you tried other pages too?
Hopefully some J-Pod listeners have better ideas than I do.

I'm not very sure about this either, but there are monthly-rentable flats and they might have
flat for families. If you and your family want to experience some Japanese stuff, hotels are
also not very bad choice; they have Japanese rooms sometimes, and there's also "ryokan".

Hope you can find the best solution!
Good luck :D

I did some more looking around, and have booked the two places I'm going to stay.

While we are in Tokyo, we will be staying in Shimokitazawa.
While we are in Osaka, we will be staying in Shinmachi, Nishi Ward.

Shimokitazawa looks like it will be a bit more relaxed compared to other parts of Tokyo which may be just what we need.

I can't wait till it's time to go.

bloritsch-san,
sounds nice!

Shimokitazawa is rather residential area, so it should be nice to stay, while Shinmachi in Nishi ward in Osaka
must be really close the the commercial centre, if I'm not wrong; close to Shinsaibashi and Namba.

Hope you'll have a great time in both cities
