はじめました、みなさん。ジョナサンです。カナダからです。一年で日本語を勉強しました。
でも、少し漢字を分かることができます。日本の文化や日本語で大好きです。次年で日本に行きたい。

Hi all. This is my first post, and would appreciate any help/corrections that can be given. I understand a few kanji, and some grammar. Unfortunately I believe my vocabulary is lacking, though I think I understand some grammar fairly well.

Is 「～できて」from 「できる」example: 「日本語を書くことができる。」?
So instead of "to participate" it's "can participate"?

Yes! できて is from できる and this ～て is like a linking form.
To understand how ～できて　うれしいです structure works, I can translate it as "I can/could ....., and so I'm happy".
With your sentence 日本語を書くことができる, for example, if you want to say "You can write Japanese, so (I think) you're great", it'd be
日本語を書くことができて、すごいですね。
