Juice = Hello?

Postby SDSkuld » January 5th, 2007 5:40 am

Komban wa. This seems like a nice community, and hopefully someone can answer the burning question about the Japanese language that has always puzzled me.

A couple of times in anime, I have seen characters greet each other by saying, "Juusu!" (Juice?) Does anybody know what that is about? Arigatou gouzaimasu. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

I don't read manga, so I can't say, but I'm relatively sure that they'd be saying "Deuce", not "juice". They're both written with the same kana. That's the basis of a joke on a Wii Sports commercial on Japanese TV now.

from my martial arts days when you bowed onto the mat or to your opponent you made a noise something like uss - which I guess is the same as deuce but I never worked out what it was meant to be saying

オス is a manly way of saying "hello". It's short for はようございま

^Oooo....I knew it was slang, but didn't know that. Good stuff.

I do believe, however, that オス (osu) is rather informal (it is slang, after all). So just be careful where and when you use it (if you use it at all).

I've been taught that オス was short for 押し 忍ぶ (oshi shinobu), where oshi means push and shinobu means endure. I think Jpod had a blog entry on this a long time ago.

I tend to say "oss" with a long "o," although sometimes I hear people say "uuss," as if with a German umlaut. Sometimes I hear men draw it out in really slangy usage, so that it sounds like "euuuusssss."

I think it's pretty well documented that it's a shortening of おはようございます, with the kanji being applied after the fact...
