Email Greeting

Hi,

I am really enjoying all the Japanese Pod resources.

I would like to ask a question about email greetings?

If I am emailing someone for the first time, is it normal to use the same introducing phrases as I would in person?

eg

Tanaka-San, Hajimemashite

.......

yoroshiku onegai shimasu

or are there different phrases for emailing?

the situation is that i have been introduced by a third party (by email) to some Japanese colleagues that I am going to meet when I visit Tokyo. I am going to send them an email to say hello, and arrange when to meet them. It will be an email in english, but I would like to include some Japanese greetings to be polite.

There's one interesting fact I learned about email greeting from my Japanese teacher. She told me and my classmates that it's not okay to say "thank you　ありがとうございました" at the end of every letter or email, use "よろしくおねがいいたします" instead. My friends and I said that in other cultures, it's normal to say "thank you" at the end of a letter, it's a way to show respect and isn't it a little disrespectful if you don't include it? My teacher said that it's not the same in Japan. "よろしくおねがいいたします" is the most powerful phrase when you want to show your appreciation in any circumstances. The funny thing is I hardly ever use it during daily life. Always "ありがとう".

よろしくおねがいします is like ‘thank you in advance’.
You can use that in your daily conversation, too.
