keitai lingo - texting/e-mails/IM's

Postby kij » April 27th, 2006 1:57 am

I am an english teacher in the inaka and recently did a lesson for my jr high kids on txting, email, IM's in English by teaching them common abbreviations like btw, ttyl, brb... etc. Just curious if anyone knows this kind of lingo in Japanese??

I havent noticed much use of abbrevations here in Japan. But one thing I DO know about, is "gyaru moji". Never seen it used in real life though.

w = lol (short for warau)
orz = someone bowing. I'm not sure exactly when to use this one. I think it's when you screw up.

kao moji are great:

orz (also STO) is usually used for dejection. You've seen/heard/read something so disconcerting that you fall to your hand and knees. Like this:

Holy cow, the Japanese text messaging is a language in its own (携帯語だね?). When I was in Japan, I hung out with some Japanese girls and they went CRAZY with the texting. It seemed a common thing was to drop lots of kanji, much as you do for the United Nations 国際連合ー>国連. It was a whole different language.
