Verb ending なくたって

Postby marcoalfi3014 » April 27th, 2014 8:44 pm

I'm not sure what the verb ending なくたって means or the grammar aspect of it. Could someone explain it me? Is it related to the verb ending なくて?

Hi,

「なくたって」is same meaning of 「なくても」, These are often used as the subjunctive(and also negative form).
You can use this form to show that you can do (you don't mind) something if you don't have (there is/are not)something.

For example;

If I don't have enough food, but I can still survive.
もし食べ物が十分なくたって(なくても)、私は生き残れる。

If there were no Human being in this world, but the earth still would go round.
もしこの世に人間がいなくたって(なくても)、地球は回る。

You can pay with your credit card, when(if) you don't have the cash.
現金がなくたって(なくても)、カードで支払える。

I don't care if I don't have my children.
自分の子供がいなくたって(なくても)、平気だ。

******************

「なくて」 is just negative form and also the reason for something.

I'm sad because I couldn't see my grandma.
おばあちゃんに会えなくて、悲しい。

In reality you sometimes can use 「なくて」 as meaning of 「なくても」 .
But I think the simple way of remembering is;

If  ~ . = 「なくても」
because ~ . =「なくて」

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the explanation and examples. I'm getting more confident in my Japanese grammar skills so I thought, "I'll get a children's book, that sholdn't be too difficult to read." The couple of books I bought have a lot of colloquial Japanese which is difficult to figure it out.

Here was the reference sentence: うさぎくんなんていなくたってへいきだもん。 I'm fine without rabbit, or If rabbit is not here, I'm fine.

Your welcome.

I think Japanese sentences are sometimes not so easy to figure it out even it's in children's books.
I recommend some books which Shinich Hoshi wrote. There are difficult words and grammar but many stories are very short, easy to understand and also these are interesting for adult. :)
