right, a tachikoma is a type of robot in the anime "ghost in the shell" - I know "tachi" is "together" or "plural" what about "koma"?

タチコマ is a variation of フチコマ. タチコマ (the blue one) has a separate pod for boarding, whereas you can enter a フチコマ (the red one) directly.



フチコマ comes from the name of a mythical horse, 天乃斑駒 (ameno fuchikoma), who was ridden by the god Susanoo, according to 日本書紀 (nihon-shoki), the Chronicles of Japan, which were completed at the beginning of the 8th century. It's not clear where the タ in タチコマ comes from though. Maybe it's less profound like 立ち (tachi) from the verb 立つ (tatsu) 'to stand'. Who knows?
